VirtualKeyboard overview

VirtualKeyboard is an on-screen keyboard that offers point-and-click typing using pointing devices such as a head pointer, mouse, graphic tablet, trackball, etc. This program is designed primarily for disabled persons, but it can be used also to teach children to write, to prepare kiosk environments, etc.

To use VirtualKeyboard simply click on the keys of the on-screen keyboard and each keypress will be sent to the active application. It works seamlessly with all standard Mac applications, allowing you to type virtually anywhere a hardware keyboard can be used. As with a real keyboard, to get uppercase characters if you click Shift first, or to type in all-uppercase, click Lock. Similarly, it handles Command-key combinations, dead-keys, and modifier key-click combinations.

I've been using this virtual keyboard since version 3.3 and I have absolutely no complaints. As a quadriplegic, without the use of my hands, I was extremely disappointed when I purchased my Mac, to find out that the virtual keyboard that comes with the OS X operating system, doesn't work. Almost immediately, I found this virtual keyboard and I was definitely impressed with its functionality and ease-of-use. While version 3.3 may not have been as visually appealing as say the Windows version of virtual keyboard, version 3.8.4 definitely makes up for that with the 3-D feature, as well as the new minimize feature. I was glad that the upgrade was free for registered users but, I would have gladly paid for this software again.

I like the functionality - it really does act/behave like a real keyboard, with a few extra features thrown in, such as a text field to type in and to speak back that text. Would be nice if if could act like a drawer to pop in and out whenever it got a mouse-over. However, I do not like the aesthetics - enough so to hold me back from buying the app. I hope the user interface will become more improved, maybe give it a photo realistic look, right now it looks very 2-D, and the arrows look like they were doodled in by a pre-schooler. The app looks like something out of from System 6. And the red "X" to minimize the the app is not Mac-like at all, and when it does minimize it looks as hoky as the Icon down in the dock. I hope these things will become addressed, because underneath it all I think the programing is good. To sum up, it needs to be more Mac like.

This program does provide some features not found in Apple's built-in keyboard. My only complaint is that every time an upgrade comes out for VK, my old serial number no longer works. I then have to write to the developer and ask for one that works. And with this latest version, I never received a reply back.

Why pay $12 for functionality that is already on your computer? Enable the International menu in the top bar and then select Keyboard Viewer. Press the maximize button if you find it too small. Voila! You just saved $12!

its the next best thing to a wireless keyboard for computing from the couch. And the price is cheaper than a wirless. I know this is for the handicaped, but sometimes reaching for a keybaord disrupts my relaxed state or seems like a big deal. I used to use keystrokes until the price got so high that I dropped out. From zero to a few hundred dollars. A second moniter is a ideal setup.
