Tumult Whisk overview

Tumult Whisk is a lightweight HTML and PHP editor with a live preview that updates as you type.

Note: Whisk is the app previously known as HyperEdit!

Whisk is an essential app in your toolkit for HTML, PHP, CSS, and Javascript programming. It is great for learning web development, testing snippets of code, or building entire web pages.

Whisk’s integrated preview pane displays the web page live as you type. Whisk breaks the tedious cycle of writing HTML, saving the file, then reloading and viewing the page in the browser. Combining the writing phase with the viewing phase clarifies the effects of your changes and speeds up the overall process of making a web page. W3C-based validation will red-underline any mistakes. It uses the same rendering engine found in Safari, so it is not only standards compliant, but also very fast.

Use Whisk For:
  • Crafting HTML to make sure it looks exactly as you want it
  • Testing and executing PHP code
  • Writing blog posts, forum entries, or rich emails
  • Interactively trying out CSS
  • Running and debugging JavaScript
  • And creating whole websites
Main Features:
  • Preview pane quickly renders HTML and PHP as typed, using the same engine as Safari
  • Watched Files automatically (or manually) determine when files are changed and will reload the web preview (file access permissions required)
  • Live HTML W3C-based validation shows errors and highlights problem tags with a red underline
  • Preview to other browsers or the Hype Reflect app on iOS
  • Web inspector/console/dev tools access
  • Customizable syntax highlighting coloring
  • Reusable code snippets and color swatches
  • Scroll sync keeps can keep the editor and preview at similar spots
  • View HTML source code generated by the PHP engine
  • Attach Style Sheets for viewing how blog posts/markup will look with external styling
Because We Love the Mac:
  • Written in Cocoa exclusively as a macOS app (supports 10.12 through 10.15)
  • Adopts new macOS features and is gorgeous in Light and Dark modes

What’s new in version 2.6.0

Updated on Sep 08 2021

Version 2.6.0:
  • Includes built-in PHP to render previews since it is removed in macOS 12 Monterey
  • New PHP binary path preference automatically detects common installation paths
  • Dialog windows for JavaScript alert(), confirm(), and prompt() calls
  • Fixed issue where switching the system to Dark Mode would not change the code editor color
  • Fixed an issue where opening a PHP document may not immediately show a preview without a refresh
  • Other small bug fixes

This software has not been updated in almost 10 years. Yet, it's still my go-to app for quick HTML edits. I have switched to Coda for most of my coding need, but the smaller window and simplicity of HyperEdit make me go back to it regularly.

I've just started using this, in order to see what I'm doing while I speed-learn CSS. Very useful, easy to use - apart from not remembering the last-opened-doc layout, which means you have to resize and adjust the divider every time you open a doc. I'm getting round this now with an iKey shortcut.

I really wish that Apple had not abandoned iWeb as I have yet to find a replacement that I like as much. On the hand coding side, if you know CSS and HTML this app is a dead on simple editor, with a great preview pane.

Well, welcome to AppStore! Promoted by a MacWorld 2004 rating... Apple definitely needs some 'version control'. So far, this here is much more reliable. (price is top on the App Store, btw, $14.99)

Very good application. Fast, user-friendly and completely WYSIWYG. I used to use Taco, but now this is the HTML editor of choice... with Taco coming in a close second.

Splendid application! Transparency in the colors - at least for window background - would be awesome.

First I tried a trial of the award winning BBEdit, an excellent program but a little too expensive. After a while I found this program, which offered many features I was looking for in a HTML/PHP editor (validation, live preview, code snippets, unicode support, Javascript console). Moreover, the developer seems to be open to suggestions and promised to release an universal binary (free for registered 1.x users). Only downside is the stability, which is not really bad and is said to improve in later versions.

HyperEdit is possibly the best web development application for any platform. For a php or layout specialist you cant go past it. The price is just the iceing on the cake. You wont find anything cheaper thats upto the quality of HyperEdit

HyperEdit has been my preferred editor for at least a year now. The developer has been responsive and creative which makes for a great application now, but an even better one in the future. Live preview is a must and the simple power of HyperEdit's features re: html, css, top the cake with icing.

A fantastic application from a very responsive and helpful developer. Although HyperEdit is released as freeware it is definitely worth a donation since it is better than many commercial offerings.

This is an awesome little text editor. The PHP integration made my day: It's just so much easier to program when you see the errors right away. I wish syntax coloring was somewhat more elaborate, and I wish it had some more support for HTML and CSS, but hey - it's free, and it's bound to improve! As soon as I do actually have some money, I will donate to this project.

Every once in a while a brilliant application such as HyperEdit surfaces. As a tool to expedite workflow or, perhaps a teaching aid for newbies there is nothing I am aware of that comes close. Should be included in Apple OS.

Nice start! The live preview is a wonderful feature I've been waiting years for... there are only two things that really need work, in my mind. The first is the ability to see updates to external CSS stylesheets in real time as well, so we don't have to manually include them in the file. The second is better syntax highlighting that isolates HTML attributes, tags, internal strings, JavaScript, etc. Some might say the editor needs more markup features as well, and I suppose I can see why, but I don't see that as a priority. The ability to dynamically generate the code for some random bits and bobs of HTML is nice, but it's not necessary for writing good HTML.
