SQLEditor overview

SQLEditor is a SQL database design and entity relationship diagram (ERD) tool for OS X. It replaces typing SQL by hand with dragging, dropping, and clicking, making database creation faster and easier. And if you already have a database, then SQLEditor can help you see what it looks like by reverse engineering a diagram. Or use SQLEditor to create documentation with the new design report exporter. SQLEditor may be useful if you need to design a database or you have existing databases to manage. It's also useful if you're learning about database design.

SQLEditor supports exporting database designs to MySQL, Postgres, SQLite, Oracle, and others. Plus it also imports and exports Ruby On Rails Migration files.

Group License: $349, Single User License $79. Discounts for qualified educational orders.
Note SQLEditor 3 is a paid upgrade from earlier versions. Free upgrades for licenses purchased on or after 1 March 2014.

Solid app, allowing you to draw ERD diagrams, which get reliably translated into the native script language - SQL or otherwise - of several databases, including: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Filemaker, Rails and Django. Able to also connect to several databases and create the ERD diagram on-the-fly, thereby making it somewhat easier to reverse-engineer the data design of existing systems. These features alone make it worth the money.

I will deduct 1 star, however, because the developer has been announcing version 3 for well over a year, making existing users fearful that development has been abandoned. Also, although it is a solid data design tool, it is seriously lacking in the graphics department: the user is given very little control over the graph's appearance - it is impossible to even change the font used in the graphs, let alone change stroke and background colours. More polish on the interface is still needed, as it still looks like a java app programmed by a newbie.

PROS: solid ERD diagramming tool, which reliably produces good database scripts - in SQL as well as in other languages - which is directly usable in a variety of systems.
CONS: very little graphics configuration options - your graphics will all look like java charts from the 1990's. Interface needs polish.

This is very useful for me which is about SQLEditor. I am a student of computer science and SQL is my favorite book to do practice related to database. This full website contains a large collection of stuff which is very useful for all of us. Buy our best safety flooring from http://safetyflooringco.co.uk/safety-flooring.html

Great program and support. The latest release would not launch and the support I received from the developer was excellent -very responsive and got me a version of the program that worked. He also got the latest build working within a week. Turned out to be a JAVA issue. I highly recommend this program.

I tested SQLEditor with an SQLite database. It imported the table structures fine, using the appropriate driver. After playing with it a bit, I realize that SQLEditor only shows relationships between tables that are set up as a "foreign key" within the tables. SQLite (and I think others) don't have a foreign key parameter for fields within tables. I set up relationships in SQLite within views. Unfortunately, SQLEditor does not appear to show views or the relationships tat they contain. So it seems of little use to show or edit the structure of my SQLite databases.

Just thought I'd post an updated comment because my original one below is a bit outdated. I've been using this for years now, and it is by far the best ER diagramming tool I've used on OS X or Windows. Everything is straight-forward. You don't have to hover over buttons to figure out what they do and most of the work takes place in the canvas area (and optionally, the inspector) keeping you from having to constantly return to a toolbar or menu. The layout tools are simple. Color, notes and canvas areas make it easy to organize and group segments, types and blocks of entities around the work area. Printed output is fantastic and you can turn on page-breaks as well, enabling you to move objects to fit on individual sheets just as you want. Import and export tools are awesome, and being able to see the raw query as you work is handy. I use it for both MS SQL and MySQL. Though it doesn't (yet?) come configured to diagram for MS SQL Server, it is fairly trivial to get it configured for it in terms of diagramming. For MySQL and a few others, it's perfect out of the box. The developer is responsive and the software is actively maintained. For any serious DB architect on the Mac, this is worth every penny.

I have to admit that the app is quickly entering maturity stage and may well be one of the quite popular among database design enabled OS X users. The recent version even managed to properly read-in and parse my hand-made DDL with lots of nasty things inside ;-) I still have some doubts concerning the data types, which could be more aligned to what the (chosen?) RDBMS supports but this is in no way a show-stopper. The author is supportive, reacts to bug reports and suggestions quickly and efficiently. Price, while not cheap is quite moderate and IMHO not too high.

Excellent, excellent, excellent! This great ER Diagramming tool just keeps getting better with every release. It's got the basic functions for creating simple diagrams that can be exported to a few different SQL formats. It doesn't easily allow you to specify field lengths, and it's got a few minor bugs, but otherwise it's a great tool.

I guess I should just download it and have a look, but... what databases does it support (the review kinda misses that !) I have a remote SQL Server database (actually it runs inside a VPC session on my Mac) and a native MySQL database that I need to develop against... one tool that can do that (so I don't have to go into Enterprise Manager) would be great....

To the Anonymous post below: You mean inferior like your "inferrior" spelling ability? Wake up man, MySQL resources have been available for the Mac for some time and you can't be dumb enough to knock MySQL (or are you?). The MySQL database server is the world's most popular open source database. With more than five million active installations, MySQL has quickly become the core of many high-volume, business-critical applications. Customers such as Yahoo!, Google, Cisco, Sabre Holdings, HP and NASA are realizing significant cost savings by using MySQL's high performance, reliable database management software to power large Web sites, business-critical enterprise applications and packaged software applications. And, by the way, don't knock Macs because 'MonopolySoft' doesn't port their software to other platforms. Don't kid yourself, Macs can certainly handle it.

Hate to say it but until there is an application equal to Microsofts SQL Enterprise Manager the Mac will always be inferrior on the Database side. Shoot I'd settle for Access for Mac for small local DB's. :-( File Maker is a joke & at least Access can do a good job of administering SQL Server Databases.

I agree with many of the other reviewers that this is a good-to-great start. Some of the things I would like to see from a designers/DBA perspective would be: - ability to change the relationship style to Crow's Feet or at least directional relationship (The F for foriegn key is good, but I would like it to be visible in the relationship. - ability to set cardinality and referential integrity on relationships - ability to set indexes on a table - ability to add views (denoted differently from tables) - ability to add stored procedures - ability to add triggers (when available... see theme comment below) - ability to separate items into multiple SQL sections (e.g. primary keys, foreign keys, procedures, views, etc with ADD/DROP functions being an option). This would drive how the SQL was written and nicely divide (if the user wanted to) constraints from structure, adds, drops, etc. - ability to specify more data types at the application level instead of having to type those in. - ability to set a "theme" for the type of SQL database that would be written to (e.g. MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, etc.) this would drive optimizations in the SQL in the future. This isn't quite where I could use it yet, but for a 1.0 release and a good set of features to get started, it is something I don't have a Mac tool for this functionality yet. Especially one that writes out SQL. I hope my comments are read as suggestions to improve the product and hopefully drive future features so that you are encouraged to continue development.

Very interesting implementation. Several "wish-list" items include: - ability to set id field to "auto-increment" - ability to re-sort field order by dragging - selection of field type by typing the first characters and having the selection "auto-fill" (e.g., typing "var" auto-completes "VARCHAR(255)"). - ability to designate a field for indexing and full-text indexing Would be wonderful to see in a later version the ability to diagram and existing database live, and after changes are made, to have those implemented to the database.. but that's for a later day, eh? Nice first effort, indeed!
