Readiris overview

Readiris is the most powerful and accurate OCR software for OS X. It accurately and rapidly transforms your paper documents, your PDFs and images files into editable information ready to be use.

Completely redesigned for Mac OS X, Readiris offers an easy to use user interface, which clearly guides you through the recognition steps. Extremely powerful, Readiris Pro exactly recreates the original format of your documents and replaces columns of text, tables, and graphics in the output file.

A large choice of output formats allows you to choose the format that best suits your needs. You can recreate a document in word processors or in spreadsheet programs, to get indexed PDF files with both the image and the text or to easily create Web pages thanks to the WYSIWYG HTML output format.

this does absolutely nothing to enhance the pleasurable experience of scanning with HP utils. why buy something that will not complement the util? to me, this is a ripoff type software that is not required for basic scanning documents.

TwainProxy is *still* 32-bit only. Seriously??? First I had to buy VueScan because Epson has stopped supporting their TWAIN scanning software, and now Canon/IRIlink has failed to create a 64-bit version of TWAINProxy???

No thanks, I'll stick to the last boxed copy of ReadIRIS until this issue is remedied/fixed, if ever.

At this rate, I don't think ReadIRIS 18 will ever come out...

I have been using Readiris Pro for a number of years. I have not had the problems reported below. (fingers crossed). There is a dearth of OCR software for the mac and when my previous software (OmniPage I think) stopped being supported I had to look elsewhere. ViewScan has rudimentary OCR and did the trick for a while. Then I tried Readiris, which was ported across from Windows I think. I have found the OCR engine quite accurate. I have spent little time teaching it. The ability to save the file as pdf, doc or xls is great. There are more export options available too. You can also save documents in a multi-page format, which is handy for pdf. I was able to upgrade from my version 16 software for $69. This necessitated leaving MacUpdate and going into the IRIS website. I did have trouble activating version 15 a few years ago, but I got a prompt response from the support site and had no further problems. I had no problems installing, activating and registering version 17 in High Sierra 10.13.4. I think the software does what it claims to do. The UI is a bit Windows like, but that does not worry me. Windows is quite friendly these days. So I take of ½ a point for that. I will continue to use it.

Anyone considering purchase of Readiris OCR software should be aware that they have ZERO service. Apparently, you cannot get to a live human being even using their sales number. Sending questions to Support results in automated replies of receipt but NEVER an actual reply. Updates generally cannot be applied, for whatever reason. New versions of the MAC OS often force re-entry of a serial number, but after a few updates, then the software is bricked. Several reviewers here are correct: Do not purchase this software.

I really wanted to consider upgrading but I want a real demo for I have been burned before. And the stupid 50 page limit cannot be justified. I have reported many bugs over the decades but never a response; fixes come late. Tech support is poor. I was forced to use the windows version for many years for it was vastly better. Shame they like Abbyy hate/cynical about the mac market. Nuance too; there will never be a Mac Omnipage. Prizmo is the best so far but its based on Google's OCR engine so they can't tweak it.

If you're a Mac user, DO NOT PAY FOR THIS SOFTWARE! I can't speak to the Windows version, but the Mac version is one of the worst apps I've ever experienced.

Their most recent update will not install under OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). Their technical support phone line goes to a recording telling the caller to email them. So far I have not found an OCR company that delivers quality support.

"Download" links to a page that will allow us to "watch a complete demonstration of the product" if we provide our complete name and email first. Surely their website has been vandalized. The rest of their website offers no information I can find about whether my license key for Readiris Pro 11 (Which never worked) will work on this (fixed?) version. Guess I'll never know. No-star for v.11, and for denying me an opportunity to give them a second chance.

Currently at version 14.0.9. Whilst there are a few "Windows-isms", in general this application is pretty decent, with fast and accurate recognition. The UI is also much better than in previous versions. My only major criticism is that there does not seem to be any logic behind the scattering of the icons/buttons around the window - some are buttons that cause actions to take place, some are "switches" and some switch into different modes. Some bring up popup menus, some bring up dialogs and it is all very random. I hope there's a bit more logic involved in the code itself!

I got this when it was just about the only game in town. Updates are very expensive and in my experience, very little changes from version to version. Bugs continue unabated and usability is never improved. If you are having problems and need a point update, e.g. 12.04 to 12.05, you have to call them up, deal with the usual nonsense, and beg, plead, and demand until they send you the release, which really should be going to all customers automatically. Releases are expensive through the company but they constantly spam you with "great deals!" and "last chance!" (especially for their associated pen reader) -- a lot like owning Toast, in that regard. Seems the only time they realize you're a customer is when they want to sell something. The rest of the time it's hard to convince them. Meanwhile ABBY does just about everything ReadIRIS does, only faster and more accurately. I own Prizmo but have not tried its OCR yet. The program does have a lot of features and such so I have to give it to them, and it does work pretty well at character recognition.

To anyone looking for a decent OCR application - Prizmo is well worth looking at. It has a much nicer UI than ReadIRIS, the licencing is much less of a hassle than ReadIRIS, it is more stable, and it is better value into the bargain.

SO frustrating! I have just bought the new v14 (up to 14.0.3 already - MacUpdate please catch up!) and it is the same mess that it always was. The underlying OCR engine seems generally excellent, and the UI this time is ALMOST decent. However there are two very big problems. First it crashes all the time, particularly with longer files - not very long, you understand, but when trying to scan a simple text-only document of 15 pages it crashes EVERY time when it gets to the "formatting" stage. If I break the job down into sections of four or five pages then the job often completes before crashing but this is really pretty poor - don't they ever test this app? Secondly, although it outputs into MS Word .docx format, every page is contained within a text frame. This is an incredible nuisance if you are trying to recreate a multi-page document - you have to go through and copy the text out of the farme on every page and paste it into a new document before you end up with one long document. There doesn't seem to be any way of controlling this behaviour either. Another minor inconvenience is that when you import you have to uncheck the Page Analysis checkbox in the import dialog every time unless you want ReadIRIS to create multiple frames on every page which always seem to be bad guesses. There is a preference to not have this checked but it doesn't seem to work. Get these issues sorted out and the app will be very decent and fairly reasonably priced. Without this it is very annoying and much more of a hassle than it should be. Buy it at your peril until they sort it out.

I just bought this, and got v12.0.6 - which is interesting because the online update for the latest version is only 12.0.5. At any rate, the output PDF format Text-Image is broken. It only includes text on the output page, no images anywhere. I contact support and was told "Use Image-Text". Um, NO! That isn't what I want, so their answer to a broken product is "Don't use that feature". Unbelievable!! Of course, no refund available. How stupid can you get. PERHAPS I can get an update to fix this some months down the road, but what a waste of money.

The trial system for this software is in one word: retarded. They are obsessed with piracy and won't offer potential paying customers try before buy because of pirates. Who wants to pirate business software anyway! The kids have no interest in scanning in homework assignments. Come on. So I will not buy it as I cannot try it out on MY AND I SAID MY documents. I am not paying then finding out it works bad on my workflow. Stupid people how do you think that solves piracy? All your doing is annoying business people like me. I am not taking your silly web site trial to my boss. I need to show it works before we commit! I am not also wasting time contacting you to do this when others are in the evaluation stage without contacting them. One of them will get the sale not you. Fix it! Good app destroyed by a silly trial concept. Pirating OCR software talk about paranoia.
