Online Bible overview

Online Bible is a full-featured program designed for serious Bible students. You can display Bible passages and notes in any number of windows. Most operations can be performed using either the mouse or keyboard commands. The program is both powerful and easy to use.

In addition to the King James Version, over thirty other English versions are available. These include the 1984 New International Version, 1995 New American Standard Bible, 1982 New King James Version, 1989 New Revised Standard Version, 1996 New Living Translation, and many others. Greek and Hebrew texts are also available for original language study. In addition several foreign languages are supported, including Dutch, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and others. See Appendix E at the back of the User's Manual for a detailed list of Bible texts and add-on modules currently available.

Complete search facilities include, word, phrase, multiple words, wild cards, and much more. Searches can use AND, OR, XOR, NOT, and proximity operators to select verses. The range for searches can be restricted. All verses are displayed in context rather than asking you to choose a verse from a list to display. Searches are very fast, taking only a second or two even on older Macs.

You can add notes to a verse using the built-in editor. Cross-references can be included in your notes for automatic recall. In addition to verse notes, topical material, pictures, and word studies can also be saved.

A special Copy Verses command is provided to copy Bible passages via the clipboard directly from the Online Bible to any currently running application. The format of the verses is controlled via preferences set by the user.

I first downloaded Online Bible back in the 1990’s when I had my first Desktop Computer. I have used It constantly over the years and it has been my ‘go to’ Bible programme. I have just purchased an iPad Pro 2020 but unfortunately I have been unable to download Online Bible... Any help would be much appreciated. Keep up the great work.

Please note that while the last version of Online Bible which was based on Ken Hamel's code -- version 4.2.1 -- does not work under macOS Mojave, there is now a new version of the app -- which bears the same name -- which you can find in the App Store.

This new version is written by Cross Link Services B.V., and currently stands at version 1.3.6. It is free, although it can be expanded for a price.

While this newer version does not have all of the bells and whistles of the original OLB -- at least not yet -- the free version does have all of the basics, including Strong's Numbers, Hebrew and Greek Lexicons, the TSK, Easton's Bible Dictionary, the Apocrypha, and footnotes.

As I said, it is still lacking in some areas, but it does work on Mojave and is 64-bit.

Hi! Online Bible is a great program. I have been using it for years and now I am disappointed that the new Mac OS Mojave won't support it. Does any one have a way to at least use the Hebrew and Greek fonts to work with Mojave?

OLB version 4.2.1 won't remember the font size I have selected in Mac OS High Sierra. I think the new file system in this OS version isn't quite compatible with version on OLB. Will this ever get fixed? This is my favorite Bible for use on my Macbook Pro.

I love this program, but it stopped working with Sierra. Took a big Google search to find its web site, and buried on it is a comment that it does not work with Sierra. I've found a few web sites that sort of do the same thing, and some widgets and iOS apps that can call up certain verses, but nothing comes close to this program for me. Anyone have any ideas? One thing I thought of was running an older version in OS-9 emulation with SheepShaver. I tried running the latest version, but it won't run under OS-9. Anyone know where I can find an older version?

MacUpdate.com, please update the developer link on this page. Ken Hamel is now deceased, and the provided link goes to some kind of health page in Japanese. As Mac007 notes below, the current URL for the Mac version of Online Bible -- which hasn't been updated since 2009 -- is the following: http://www.online-bible.com/maconlinebible.html

As a Christian writer and evangelist -- Endtime Prophecy Net -- I have been using Online Bible for many years now, along with the installed Hebrew and Greek lexicon modules -- which I purchased many years ago for about $10 each -- as well as a few other useful modules. This program has been an invaluable tool in conducting my Bible research and writing. It is 100% stable and never crashes, not even once to my recollection. While some folks prefer newer Bible apps for the Mac which have more modern interfaces, personally, I prefer functionality over form, and Online Bible suits my purposes just fine. God bless Ken Hamel -- now deceased -- for his dedication in writing this program. It has been a blessing to many thousands of Christians and Bible students.

Still the best Bible software on the Mac. I know it many years and now I can appreciate it even more after my other experiences with MacSword and Accordance. OLB is free and comes with some excellent tools for free: King James Bible, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Geneva Bible Notes of 1599. This all synchronized in parallel windows. And additional free Hebrew and Textus Receptus (Stephanus 1550) add-ons. Simply perfect. I don't care about the old-fashioned Classic GUI, but like the high speed and the small RAM footprint of OLB. I wish to encourage the programmers to continue with this valuable FREE software!

Now I have downloaded several modules and am very happy with this program. Too bad it didn't come with a little better explanation. I am able to do all that I need until I am able to pay for some favorite versions of the Bible. I can search words and verses along with using Lexicons for Hebrew and Greek. I was able to change font sizes in the preferences. For others, keep trying before you rate this.

I also tried to download this and got nothing. I clicked on the Online Bible icon in my applications folder and it asked for version.dat. So now I have nothing but wasted time.

Downloaded it. It asks me for the file 'Version.Dat.' Now, what would that be, exactly? And why would you just not google 'online bible' and go online to access it? There are already plenty of online bibles. This seems weird. If someone could explain why this app would make things more convenient then please do so.

I've been using the Macintosh Online Bible for at least ten years. It is my favorite Bible application. Great search capability, lots of keyboard shortcuts, multiple windowing configurations, easy look-up of Strongs' numbers, good cross-reference, multiple lexicon support. Other features: personal notes, favorite verses and verse lists, easy way to make documents with hyper-links to scripture verses, easy text-to-speech. Another plus is good support. If you have problems, read the Help tutorial, it is very well written. The negatives: Setting font and font size for all the Bible versions is tedious and there is no high-lighting yet.

I began using Online Bible (Mac) waaay back in the OS9 days. It was a real blessing and help through my three years at a Bible Institute, helping me to study, write papers, prepare sermons, etc. A friend in school had the Windows/Microslop version and I just couldn't seem to get the hang of it. I've tried many, many other programs but ALWAYS keep coming back to OLB Along those lines, is it just me or was the learning curve on Accordance a little "steep"? I find the search capabilities in OLB are AWESOME! whether searching by English words, Greek/Hebrew words, or even by Strong's numbers! Adding my personal notes/studies/commentaries at each verse is a great advantage too! OH yes, I need to praise the developer's response time as being TREMENDOUS too!!! (even if it was a LOOOONG wait for a native OSX version) Personally, I'd like to see the interface in OLB updated to a more "Mac-like" presentation.

Incredible Bible and reference collection. I'm beyond impressed - I'm amazed at the quality of such Bible program as this v3.5.1 which I use in Classic. Get it.

I have been a OLB user for many years and appreciate it quick and fast capabilities. Recently also purchased Accordance. There is a place for both programs. For quick searches and a wealth of somewhat older material you cannot beat OLB. The "Copy Verses" feature far exceeds everyone else's implementation. For original language searches, more current resources Accordance beats any Bible study software on any platform. I am thankful for both.

After an incredibly long beta testing, I'm glad to see this has finally released. The interface hasn't changed much over the long used classic version, which is both a positive (for us old-timers) but perhaps a liability for those newer to the Mac experience. Hopefully soon many of the texts will also be updated. (typos, etc.) I know the Byzantine Greek text has been completely revised since the 2001 edition and needs to be replaced with the 2006+ edition. With new and updated texts, hopefully on the new CD's I'm sure the value will be much more than the cost. I've found, however, in the long wait, that MacSword is so much more intuitive, flexible, and easy to use. (More OS X-like) The only thing really lacking in MacSword are the copyrighted texts.

Just so you know: This guy has been responsible for not only the OS X version, but in the past the Classic version. It's not his day job. He's done a wonderful job thus far.
