MT-NewsWatcher X overview

MT-NewsWatcher is a Usenet client for the Mac. Based on John Norstad's NewsWatcher application, it adds a few enhancements to make newsreading faster and more enjoyable. These features include message filtering, spellchecking, speech recognition, and multithreading, which allows you to perform several different commands simultaneously.

What’s new in version 3.5.3b2

Updated on Mar 19 2019

Version 3.5.3b2 (3.5.3b3):

Note: Although Finder indicates that this is version 3.5.3b2, the developer states that this is version 3.5.3b3.

General:
  • Clear the news server authentication password field when switching between news servers
  • No longer show error message when dragging and dropping in subject windows
  • Made uudecoding more robust to crud inserted into articles by news feed providers
  • Moved the MT-NewsWatcher.rsrc file to the English.lproj directory in the package to make localization easier
  • Improved typing performance by not flushing the graphics port on every caret blink
  • Greyscale images now display correctly
Fixed issues:
  • A crash closing subject windows after rebuilding the full groups list
  • A bug that could cause security failure dialogs to not be displayed on connection
  • A bug introduced in 3.5.3b1 that caused sending mail to never complete
  • The ability to drag an inline image to the Finder without selecting it (option key saves a file, rather than a clipping)
  • Authentication issues when not saving the password in Keychain
  • The display of the help images on Intel machines
  • A hang on 10.5 when extracting binaries on showing a "Choose folder" dialog (and some other related hangs)
  • A hang on 10.5 after posting a message (deadlock when destroying the spell checker object)
  • Extract Binaries would sometimes stall after choosing a destination folder

The version that is downloaded is identical to the version from July 6th 2008. It still requires Open Transport. For a brief moment, I hoped.

Is there a way to simulate OPEN TRANSPORT and make it available to Maverick users? My be by coding something in Terminal could be a possibility? Tell me what you guys think. Maybe someone can come up with an idea,

End of the road? Doesn't seem to want to run under Mavericks. With Open Transport was removed from the Core Services Framework it throws up an alert that it needs "Open Transport" and suggests you update your software. It's been great!

This is very weird. Firstly, the listing on MacUpdate shows the latest version as 3.5.3b2. In reality the latest version is 3.5.3b3. (That is also the version that the download link points to.) Secondly, version 3.5.3b3 has been out for years. The date stamp on the app is July 5th, 2008. I was really disappointed when I realised that this is the version I have been using for ages. I've been hoping for an update that allows me to fetch the entire listing from the newsgroups that I subscribe to, rather than only listing the 100,000 most recent articles. (Giganews has an insanely long retention nowadays.)

Love this app -- been using it for years. But this version (3.5.2) has a problem: When viewing messages... the scrollbars are inactive... I couldn't page long messages forward to read more. Reverted back to 3.5.1.

Great job to continue to evolve this program. I think I'll finally dump Thoth for this UB app. Keep up this great work! One request, would be very nice to see the threading within a message window, similar to what has been achieved in the article window. Not sure if this is in the plan?

Downloaded and tried. I think I will be staying with Thoth -- even if only PPC. MT-NW is missing one big feature that Thoth has, the ability to designate a different default save location for each newsgroup.

Has development for this program stopped? Too bad if true, because MTNW in it's current form is buggy and badly designed, but with 10.4.3 it gets worse: Every couple of days I am unable to write postings. When I enter the first word of a message plus a space, MTNW freezes, making the program much less joyful than before. Until now MTNW had a lot of bugs and shortcomings but it was at least usable. The program seems to die a slow death and that is sad, since its basic functionality is still the best compared to other readers. I can only give it a very low number of points now.

Still the best free newsreader on OS X. Mature code, stable, with lots and lots of features -- threading, kill filtering, X-Face support, you name it. The anti-spam filter is great. The interface could take better advantage of what OS X has to offer, but at this price, I ain't complaining.

Used to use this ages ago under OS8, but stopped using Usenet altogether under 9 and X (although I remember playing with one of the first Carbonized versions of MTNW in the early days of X.) Recently I had been using Pan but switched back to MTNW - it's like an old friend. The UI could use some work - you can't reverse-sort in column headers by just clicking, you have to option-click, for example.

Meet the new MT Newswatcher, same as the old MT Newswatcher... Updated and more stable (hasn't randomly crashed on me once), MTNW still seems to lack a few niceties. First, its yEnc handling leaves something to be desired. Files which Unison handles with aplomb cause NW to issue truncated file warnings. Not a problem with MP3s, but with archive files you're heading to PARsville, daddy-o. The UI, as others have noted, is a bit dated. It works for me, though it's a little frustrating to have the key command for "Mark Read" (command M) next to the key command for "Cycle Windows" (command comma) and next to the command for "New Article" (command N). Thank goodness for Menu Master. Overall it's an excellent programme. Highly stable now, which is really great. Nothing would anger me more than having gone through an MP3 newsgroup to set up a download and to see "The Application MT NewsWatcher has unexpectedly quit" pop up on my screen after pressing command B. As I say, that hasn't happened once with the new version, and I for one, and deeply gladdened by the rectification of this grevious error. In addition to this newfound stability, BinHex compatibility has been restored. Huzzah, though I guess it doesn't much matter since most people use the controversial yEnc these days. The junk filter seems to highlight most spam, but it is an exercise in frustration to get it to remember settings. I've filtered and refiltered newsgroups a dozen or more times only to see a non-spam post marked as junk over and over and over. What does it want from me, blood? In all, the junk filter is a decent idea, but since it doesn't automatically move junk posts to the killfile it's not as useful as it could be. Making it more easily trainable (and a little more intelligent to begin with) would greatly increase its utility. Overall it's an excellent little programme, made all the better by virtue of being free. While it seems all I've done is complain, these are indeed my only complaints about the application. In every other regard it is an absolute joy to use. The ability to set group settings or to have multiple posting profiles, for example, make this a far more useful programme than Unison. And did I mention it's 100% free? As the RIAA and MPAA slowly tighten their grip on American consumers' freedoms, Usenet may be the last refuge for the P2P community. You need a good app to get you there. MTNW might be just the ticket.
