MoneyWell

BEWARE: I am running Version 1 and this month i deleted the transactions for the month of December(only). In doing so all my transactions since 2012 have disappeared. I used time machine and launched a backup version prior to the deletion date but still no transactions. The reply I got from Moneywell: "Unfortunately, we only took over MoneyWell at the start of 2019, we don't have any working copies of MoneyWell 1 and don't believe it works on any recent versions of macOS, so we aren't able to offer any kind of insight into what might have happened." VERY unfortunate.

I love the app - one of the best and have used for years (Since v.1) However - the latest versions no longer support cloud sync do to Dropbox changing methods. So I can't use it anymore and am trying to find a replacement.

This is the best app for budgeting and keeping track of spending that I've found for Mac. I find it indispensable. Once you understand how its budgeting features work, it makes making a spending plan, monitoring spending and staying within a budget extremely easy. I have not found another Mac finance app that works so well in this regard.

I've also never had problems with the app quitting unexpectedly or experienced any major bugs.

I have a few criticisms, though: development is slow and the website for the app got rid of the forums which used to be helpful. But I'm still giving it five stars because I think it's the best app for Mac for personal finance.

I purchased MW1 back in 2009 and used it until a few weeks ago when I had to upgrade due to running Sierra. I installed MW3 and had issues. It took about a week but Kevin started emailing me and did so often until my questions were answered and things were fixed. I remembered from 2009 when I had initial questions how Kevin wrote me then too. It seems this APP is supported by the creator himself, Kevin, and I appreciate the personal contact. I guess with it being just him answering emails it can take a while to hear back, but the 1st rate support once it begins is nice. Everything is working fine now. Thanks Kevin.

Completely flaky. When you create a new statement to reconcile, it keeps setting the date at Dec. 31; you have to quit the app and go back in to set the real date. Budgeting is completely counter-intuitive. No tutorials. No response to questions. I REALLY want to migrate to something else.... anything.... but am afraid of losing data.

I downloaded the trial of this application and quite liked it but when I contacted their support service to ask a simple question I didn't receive any reply at all. I contacted them again and didn't get any reply to that either and still haven't a month later. As a result of this lack of support and customer service I decided against buying the software. It's a shame as the software itself is quite good and has plenty of potential and I like the bucket system but I'm not paying money to a company that cannot provide even basic support.

The developer has posted a private beta to those users who bought in to an advance release. That was ... some time ago. Since then, nothing. Granted, the beta 3.0 of MoneyWell runs nicely on OS X 10.11. However, the developer is clearly not interested in doing any support of this app. I keep it because I don't see anything that fits my method of tracking budgets. The second favorite, iCompta, has its own problems. For instance, I could download my Bank of America account immediately with Moneywell while I had to take an hour to figure out how to jury-rig the same download in iCompta. Summary: This remains my personal favorite and probably the best for budget management rather than financial tracking. Use it at the current version at your own risk. Perhaps pay to be on the 3.0 beta release. Be prepared to realize, the developer has little to no interest in your input, feedback, or problems. I would rate it at 4 stars with a modicum of developer support. I rate this as a ONE STAR for the total absence of developer support.

The old version of moneywell was well-supported, but the new version is a paid version with admittedly no new features. The support forums have been removed from the web-site and emails are not returned. I bought the original and was happy about it, but I won't be purchasing an app that has no feature updates and no support.

Even though the software went to a new owner after years with the highly regarded previous owner, I took a risk and bought it. No sooner did I do that than an upgrade broke the "undo" function. Several months and updates later, it is still not fixed. Pathetic. I really liked Moneywell in concept and execution, but I feel that I can't trust the new owner to commit to its maintenance.

I was a strong supporter of this app 2 years ago. Unfortunately it seems no longer to be supported in its public forums or Webpage. The new owner/developer offers email assurances that "we are very much alive and well and development continues to move forward" while also stating in the same sentence that "we don't have features or release dates to publish at this time". The UI is sadly showing its age (nearly 2 years). While the app works locally under Yosemite, it has stutters and delays (spinning beach balls), and I have yet to re-start the sync option to use the iPhone companion app. When you want a bucket method that is designed for planning budgets with account tracking included, you basically have a choice between this app and one other. In the event of an even development of both, MoneyWell would be my very strong, personal recommendation. MoneyWell looses significant points for its current total lack of public support and development plan (you should guess whether it will or will not be sustained or die in the future). When you would be comfortable or actually prefer using an account-based method that is designed for tracking income/expenses with budget prediction included, absolutely look elsewhere. I have been. Indeed, even though I prefer the bucket and budget planning based method, I have since found an income/expense management app that will likely substitute very nicely for MoneyWell.

to bad, i've leave the boat, because: 1. lack of ipad app (they said planning for long time) 2. problem in sync 3. New iOS app and paid again 4. Always Crash iOS companion Hope they can fix is as soon as posible so not loosng another customer

I need to update my response to this program now that I've used the 2.x and 2.2 versions for the last year or so. Overall, this is a very stable and data reliable program; aspects that are essential to any financial program. It offers a thorough handling of most personal financial transactions, whether checking, investments, loans or cash accounts. Its automated banking transaction downloads are broad and robust, including the ability to screen for duplicate entries before entry. It can automate budget allotment to bucket/envelope amounts and report with clarity. It is by far the most robust yet easiest solution I've found for customers using iOS devices on a daily basis. It's implementation of iCloud syncing is flawless and never requires manual updating by the user. It would be nice if it offered Dropbox as an alternative. My only peeve, and it gets to the essence of Moneywell's methodology, is the bucket system. Once you figure out how to use it, and more importantly want to use it, Moneywell is a very helpful financial app...the best I've used out of iBank, QE, Money, Checkbook, SEE Finance, Moneydance, etc. But that's just it...if you don't like or understand the bucket system, Moneywell is difficult to use, cluttered and probably not the best solution for your personal finances. Still, it is my default finance app and I've learned to love the buckets. Plus, the iOS solution alone puts it over the top for me.

I've been a Moneywell user since 2008. I always liked what the developer was trying to accomplish and it served my needs pretty well. I put up with the occasional bugginess, poorly written iPhone app and numerous sync issues because I was already invested in the program. With the version 2 release (a paid upgrade), I've finally decided to switch to iBank rather than pay more money in hopes the developer can resolve their quality control issues.

Well, I'm use MoneyWell since 2007. Despite the fact that last release interface overcomplicated sometimes, and my system slowdown sometime (very very rare), I think it worth the money. I still believe new releases will provide more clear interface. I use MoneyWell with Numeric Notes, one for finance tracking, other for finance calculations. And I completely satisfied with them.

i'm sorry.. this 2.0 made me search for serious alternatives (at the end i jumped into Moneydance) 2.0 has no usable reports. slow UI (on a high end Mac) with my 10 years data. very difficult management of budgeting (maybe it's more powerful than others.. but i can't find my way.. ah.. i've been using 1.7 for 2 years) i'll keep an eye on this app.. but i guess Moneydance or Money suit better for me

I used this app since late summer 2010 and always felt a beta tester. From April 2010 until october 2010 there even wasn't a decent update and now as finally 2.0 is released I have to pay again - being one of their early adapters and a few weeks to early to buy their version 1.0 - which I refuse although I understand very well that not all upgrades can be free ! So I'm in need for a good alternative.

I liked and purchased MoneyWell, but over time it's bucket organization system wore me down. Entries each have toi be manually set to go into specific buckets, or you end up with a massive list of entries that aren't labeled. I mean really, who on Earth possesses enough patience to do that every day?

I've been using this product for several months. I really tried to like it, but its not ready for prime time. I would prefer a simple native sync like use, but with financial software maybe more difficult.

I was very excited about MoneyWell (see my review below), but this week I got to the point where I decided to move on and switch to another app. Yes, like many others I have been waiting eagerly for the 2.0 release, but to be honest, for a finance app the most important thing is that it's stable, rock-solid, so your data is ok. You must be able to trust the app, otherwise you'll have to start searching for some missing transactions and seek for wrong numbers. In course of this year, things got buggy with MoneyWell. Wrong (and after restarting the app: changing) numbers, missing transactions. That cost me a lot of time. I am not a beta tester! Especially syncing with the iPhone app caused problems. Probably NoThirst had dropped maintaining the sync because they were developing their new Dropbox sync (now you sync using Dropbox, they killed syncing over Wi-Fi). Apart from Dropbox-syncing there was nothing really new for the last one-and-a-half years. The iPhone app was the last big improvement. Every request to the developer is answered by promising everything will get better in version 2.0, which will ship in summer 2025. I've often wondered if version 2.0 can live up to the bold announcements, but then again, there are other apps that improve in small but steadily steps. However, I cannot wait any longer. What really bothers me isn't the slow development but the poor maintenance of the existing app.

While I realize MoneyWell is a wonderful app, the pending v2.0 keeps getting pushed back and I wonder if it will ever arrive. In the developer's own forum back in Feb 2011 the date was to be "...by April" and then the words "...this summer" popped up. It's now almost Fall and we see nothing. I understand things can go wrong and there can be delays...but if someone would just post an approximate date for v2.0 there might be hundreds of sales saved from those of us who have patiently waited for this but can't wait any longer. I'm ready to jump ship to SEE Finance if I don't hear something soon.
