pricing and upgrades are outrageous!

Pretty, and can be useful, but pricing and upgrades are outrageous. Your business might purchase it once, but good luck trying to convince anyone it's worth the upgrade price subsequently.

I was using this program just 4 weeks in test period. Worked well and I like it. For my only private use it's too expensive.

I've tried using the mac version to replace ithoughtsX due to the extra features; booooooy, you've dealing with constant crashes and it just doesn't work on mac, period. It's complete crap. Not to mention it is extremely slow and unresponsive. If you're trying to do a serious and larger project, stay away from it.

It could be the best of its kind, but it's amazing how it didn't evolve much through all the versions! The good side is that mind maps are compatible from version 6 to 10, but still no default font size for notes, and the size of the notes panel is still not remembered between sessions… :-/ I had the occasion to recently test version 10, but if you don't use anything cloudy, I haven't seen any improvement.

Well, it's clearly overpriced for a home user, but I haven't found a better organization tool yet. It's absolutely not perfect, I haven't figured out how to set a default notes font! (I frankly think they have forgotten it, though you can set a default document, which is supposed to keep the other settings — by the way, it would really be of an easier use if one could chose in a list all the fonts and colors for a given type of items, then save that list as the default settings!) I also regret that you can only link a single document or folder to an item. But all in all, it's a real "mind manager", it would be nice to make a lite version for the average home user, though.

Put me down as another person who is getting ready to switch. I've been a mindjet user for over a decade. I was thrilled when I heard they were releasing a version for Mac, and upset I had to pay almost full price for it. Their updates have been expensive. Last year I got no update with their service plan and while I got 9 this year I'm stopping. Everything with this product is extra. Their blackberry version used to be free, now it is extra. They started to bring out all sort of accessory maps, then they stopped. The icon libraries used to be included now I don't think they even exist. Mindmanager for Mac has never been nearly as good as the windows version, much less offer mac features. And now I discovered it can't even import old .mmp mindmap and I have to try and load them on some old windows solution. I've had it with Mindjet.

I tried - really tried to get this to work because I have to deal with people using Mind Manager on Windows from time to time, but was frustrated with the constant crashes on Lion, so went looking for something that would allow me to import and export Mind Manager files, and found NovaMind. Wow, what a brilliant product! Their layout options and design flexibility put Mind Manager to shame, and their support staff are very helpful. And now I'm finding that quite a few of the people I am doing business with are trying NovaMind for Windows and several have switched there too. I had used NovaMind 4 in the past, which was OK, but with v5 they have raced past Mind Manager. I understand that Mind Manager have patched the instabilities in their product, but for me it was too late - I had already switched to NovaMind, and am not intending to come back.

This updates my previous post. They've now fixed the crashes and it works well. While it's still not as powerful as their Windows version from years ago, it has certainly gotten better. It imports and exports to iThoughtsHD for the iPad through Dropbox. This is more a matter of iThoughtsHD be compatible with many desktop mind mappers than Mindjet having any export to iThoughtsHD. That said, any mind map I created or modified with iThoughtsHD used to crash, but now it doesn't so I'm happy. For the future, I'd like them to add the ability to open up multiple mind maps - side by side and tile them. This is something they had in their Windows version years ago. I'd like to see them add a Gantt chart for the future. They have this on their current Windows version. For now, I'm content. It works! Don

Mindjet acknowledges that they have problems with Lion, but this is the worst crap implementation of software I have seen in 30 years. Until they get it right, don't waste your time or money on this. BTW, I've been using Mindjet for about 8 or more years too so I don't say this lightly.

very nice (version 9) but crash often with 10.7 Lion !! impossible to export to Page or Office. I've just contacted the support to know if it is a known issue.

Does MindJet really require Java to run? It appears so ...

Not compatible with Lion - many crashes....

What about an update ? And version 9 for Mac ?

This used to be an attractive alternative but, given the price increase, I would consider MindView 3 or Buzan's iMindMap which is on sale from time to time. I have an old version of NovaMind, mentioned below, and moved away from it due to their pricing changes. For now I'll keep using an older version of ConceptDraw MINDMAP or XMind 3.0.

I was a STAUNCH MindJet MindManager supporter who put NovaMind and OmniGraffle on the backburner for several years. That said, MindJet dropped the ball seriously with NO UPDATES for over 2 years and focusing all of their development efforts on Microsoft Windoze. I now use NovaMind exclusively and they have an iPhone app that I can use and import the iPhone mindmaps to my MacPro. NovaMind 5 is coming out and the developer keeps improving the product. More importantly, their support is FIRST class. Save your bucks and switch to NovaMind, you'll be glad you did!

The version 8 update that came out today is not worth the money. If you have a copy of version 7 that entitles you to a version 8 update for no cost, take it, otherwise save your money. New licenses are now $249 - a $120 increase over the version 7 price. There is nothing about version 8 that justifies the hefty tariff. MindManager is a nice product, but there are other things just as good. Some features in version 8 are very poorly conceived - for instance to convert a mmap file to Word 2008 (but not Word 2004) or Pages 8 (but not Pages 9) you have to use a clunky process to upload the file to the MindJet website, have it converted there, and download. The converted file is an ugly format with a pasted (but not clickable) image of your mindmap that is almost completely illegible. The feature to export to a SWF does not work at all. After long delays in shipping this product, it looks like maybe the marketing folks at MindJet insisted on moving it out the door for revenue purposes -- certainly not because it is a good value for customers.

Either MindJet dropped the price on this by about $100 recently, or MacUpdate is way off! According to MindJet's page the price should be $129. With all the MU Promo people raving about XMind, I've decided to try both out. Currently I think I am leaning towards MindManager since it was written from the ground up for the Mac (by a Windows developer no less!) and it's not Java based. I'd rather support a developer who takes the time to make a true Mac application instead of just tweaking it to run on another platform. Just idling XMind was taking up 1.3 gb of virtual memory!
