MathMagic Personal Edition

A real very very good equation editor. Since version 9.8 I can use it in Catalina and Big Sur without any problem. Installation is easy and the usage too. It handles very complex formulas and therefore I thank the developers very much.

As a teacher of English and history who somehow seems to end up teaching a maths class (Australian, so not "math", but not big deal), I find MathMagic a lifesaver. Equations in MS Word are not awful in my experience, but MM is the next step up. It's flexible and very powerful, and I have always managed to come up with the expressions or equations I've needed when writing information sheets, or setting class work or assessment tasks. Not the cheapest, but when you consider the cost of the fonts alone if you bought similar separately it suddenly seems to represent pretty good value indeed. Highly recommended.

Very nice math equation editor overall. No installer. Drag and drop install type app but their fonts should be installed separately so there is one more step. Does not come with the latest Mac OS X features such as QuickLook, Spotlight, Lion's auto save, .... but not a big deal. Does not run after the free trial period, while MathType still works in a simplified version.

This must be the best equation editor for the rest of us. Actually too much feature. Though I can still remember some TeX expressions for some commonly used symbols, I feel more comfortable with this kind of UI assisted equation editor when I need a few equations from time to time. Good thing is that I can just drag equations(mostly worked well but some equations needed some retouching) from wiki web pages on to math magic window. This saved me a lot of time. Text-to-speech for equation is an interesting try. Needs more work for this TTS - their math reading syntax is not like natural math notation, variables are read by char. Their default fonts are not my type but it lets me use my own fonts. Applying color was easy - equations look nice in Keynote. Overall, great app. Definitely worth a try, if you do not have a LaTeX package already installed.

One word: LaTeX. Free to install. Free to use. Comes with a great equation editor.

Needs a major overhaul to give it better integration with todays word processors. The problem is that while doc files treat all pasted images as objects that can be manipulated like text, the docx files treat them as images. This makes it difficult to have inline equations and you end up with them on their own separate space. This is not a huge problem if you stick with Doc. Would be nice to have some editing capabilities. You simply cannot reopen a pasted image and edit it. Mathtype has its fare share of problems, but the integration with iWork and Office are compelling. Where this shines is with PowerPoint because the dweebs are Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to make the file formats of pasted objects different in the Windows and Mac versions, so embedded equations are not compatible. This program uses simple pasted images, so you do not get those problems. You can do the same with Mathtype if you save as an image an import, but its a few more clicks.

Extremely poor value, mainly because it does not deliver what it promises: this application is not really MS Word compatible - if you drag and drop to an (open) MS Word document, it appears to import your equation. However, if you save and re-open the same document in MS Word in windows, some equations might be missing! (approx 50%) in my case. Export options are to PICT, PDF or TEX/LaTEX. The use of these formats is not widespread, and it makes it difficult to insert in a standard word document which might or might not be opened in Windows. So an intermediate step is necessary to convert to something else (e.g. jpg). Finally, if you are looking at this application because it is on offer elsewhere, BEWARE!... they tend to limit your upgrade package to only 2-3 months after your purchase date. I was a student when I got this (just graduated) and as I am writing my proposal for a Doctoral thesis, I cannot update this application. It will be a looooong time before this company gets another penny out of me. On a side note the interface is awful, and some of the mathematical symbols are hard to find via the button menu (i.e. looking for a particular type of mathematical notation is not that intuitive).

The baseline adjustment for inline PICTs pasted into Mellel is now better but still not perfect. I sure wish I understood what the issues are with this as it seems like everything is in place to get this completely fixed.

I dont know what some of these reviews are going on about. This program looks and behaves like it was made 10 years ago. Indeed, the developers could not even be bothered to port the app to the Intel platform. If they were giving this away, that would be one thing, but to charge for such a passé application is laughable. Why can't someone (anyone) make a decent equation editor??

MathMagic is an excellent program for setting equations, with an easy-to-use interface and _tons_ of settings to tweak if you want; however, the defaults are just right for almost all work. The quality of the output is top-notch and way better than the ever-ugly MathType and its cheap little brother that comes for free with some word processors such as Microsoft Word. The developers of MathMagic are very responsive and find little ways to keep improving their program, even though it doesn' tneed it. I'm thankful that we have developers that (a) are passionate about making beautifully set equations and (b) know how to make a proper Mac program (really unusual in the developer community when a Mac product has a Windows counterpart).

As a physics teacher using equations in almost every presentation, test, worksheet, etc., I can say that this program definitely beats learning/using LaTeX or even using Word's Equation Editor then copying and pasting. It's updated regularly, and the developers take suggestions and implement them quickly. It's easily customizable and you can save all of your equations for later (and easy) use.

Just great. Works well with my Keynote. MathMagic generates the best quality equations in most cases(I've tried at least 5 of more Math software). Better than LaTeX equations. Their free upgrade service is also a big plus. Play with the Free trial version. It's worth if you are dealing with equations in your PDF or printing material.

In overall, I believe that MathMagic is better than MathType even though for a certain feature you may still count for MathType. If you like, I would like to make a comparision chart for you. MathMagic runs natively on Mac OS X with Aqua UI. Regarding the limitation of the printing(1 page), there is no page size limit so you can print a big one page. But position for MathMagic was to make it work well with other word processors and DTP software. So you can create any size of equations and use them within other layout software to print multiple pages and make books. We will be the best in creating beautiful equations fast and then let the other software do their best with our equations in layouting, printing, or presentation. It IS, however, in our future spec candidate list with low priority and it can be supported some that next year, I guess. There are thousands of paid customers around the world already and some education districts/countis upgraded their Mathtype software to MathMagic already.(Most of them are Mac OS X users, though.) For the pricing, our marketing team spent some time to compare all the features and prices of our competitors, and then decided the MathMagic price to be competitive in the market. Our pricing also includes 2-year free upgrades(after 2 year, you can use the last version continuously), which is our promise to improve the product continuously and then make you subscribe a new version happily. If you check, you can find that we have released updates and upgrades quite often(once a month ~ quarter basis) over the last year, while MathType 3.7 did not for years. But we are open to launch a promotional price from time to time to give more chances to use MathMagic to vertical markets, and also we can consider to change the price if it demands. I used MathMagic for months, enduring its most serious limitation: the OS X version cannot print more than one page documents. I kept expecting this to be fixed in an updater, but version 4.0.1 *still* has this egregious flaw. Now that I've done some research, I realize that MathMagic is just a second-rate clone of MathType, a truly professional-grade equation editor -- it's put out by the same people who wrote the Microsoft Word Equation Editor, but has lots more features. MathType is $130, MathMagic just a few dollars less. You decide which to purchase. Just don't waste time creating lots of equations in MathMagic, only to have its demo period expire on you, forcing into the inferior MathMagic path. To the MM people: lower your license price, and implement decent printing!

Previous versions installed the PACE copy-protection engine. Unless this has changed, avoid.

Nice program that allows me to construct and edit statistical formulas for my undergrad statistics students. Allows exporting to varied file formats so I can incorporate the fomulas into word processing programs for the course packet and/or exams. This may be idiosyncratic, but I did have to tinker with the sequence I entered data to get a bar to appear in the correct place over some symbols. All in all, a very nice program.
