MagicPrefs overview

Note: MagicPrefs is no longer under development.

MagicPrefs is no longer maintained, the functionality it provided was made possible by Api's that are now deprecated and reverse engineered private Apple frameworks

MagicPrefs is a toolbar application for OS X which aims to improve the functionality and configuration options of the Apple Magic Mouse. It features the MagicMenu, the ability to bind a variable number of finger clicks and taps to functions like Middle Click, Hold Down Both Mouse Buttons, Spaces, Expose, Dashboard, MagicMenu, etc.

  • Tap Sensitivity implements an advanced algorithm that impacts a number of factors used to determine taps, all controllable by a single slider.
  • Tracking Speed adds the ability to increase the maximum available speed by an extra 25%.
  • And to top it all off it features a real-time display of the fingers touching the surface of the mouse that you can enable to test and monitor the way the mouse sees your input.

Note: MagicPrefs is more than 5 years old now and is no longer maintained. Download and use at your own risk on OS X versions newer than 10.8 Mountain Lion.

MagicPrefs stopped working for me, too. Then I saw this on the developer's site: “MagicPrefs is more than 5 years old now and is no longer mantained. The functionality it provided was made possible by API's that are now deprecated and reverse engineered private Apple frameworks. Apple is not likely to replace the deprecated API's nor provide access to the underlying multitouch technology. So that's the end of the line for MagicPrefs and similar software. TLDR, if it doesn't work anymore that‘s it. If it still works, then its just a matter of time until it won‘t.”

For the longest time I resisted using the MagicMouse because it didn't do what I needed. Now with MagicPrefs, I am a very happy Apple mouse user just by adding a center click option, and pinch in/out for zooming text. Stable, free, efficient utility... Thanks!

I have been using the previous version for some time in Snow Leopard and just installed version 2.4. Now every time I try to use the preferences settings the application crashes. What gives?

I love the fact that this has a two-finger click that can hold both the left and right side of the mouse. I play a lot of video games and this comes in handy for Call of Duty games and Skyrim. The only confusing part is how to set presets without needing to access the Preferences and changing it. I want it to just automatically turn on if I launch an app. It doesn't seem to do so for Call of Duty or Skyrim. I'll dig around and see if there's info about this.

This wonderful little utility saved my MacBook. Apple for some unimaginable reason removed the three finger App Switcher gesture from OS X Lion, probably in favor of the useless Mission Control feature. This app is the only reliable way to get the App Switcher gesture back. But the only way I found to have the gesture work *consistently* is to enable all 3 and 4 finger gestures - up, down, left and right - to invoke the App Switcher. Then, you need to disable pretty much all of Apple's 3 and 4 finger gestures from the Trackpad settings under the System Preferences menu. This is no loss, because those gestures just switch to the useless Mission Control and widgets screen, which no one would ever seriously want to use anyway, much less have a shortcut for. You have to do both though - the utility doesn't seem quite as precise as the old gesture used to be - if there are competing 3 and 4 finger swiping gestures, even if they're different, i.e. up or down instead of left or right - MagicPrefs will sometimes miss your swiping and that's just frustrating. But until Apple brings back the 3 finger App Switcher swipe - presumably around when they realize how useless Mission Control is - MagicPrefs is the best answer I've found for MacBook users to get back this essential gesture.

I don't want to trash this software before being able to give it a chance, so just a comment for now. The software keeps saying "no mouse" when it is there. I'm running 10.7.1 on a new mini

There's some issue when working with Lion OS. When I checked in the "One Finger Middle Axis Click" from Clicks & Taps option, the middle click opens the dashboard everytime, like if it was the default option for Dashboard. I'm not able to change or configure this on dashboard. Please, help if you know how to fix this. Thanks.

Given that there are those dependent upon software companies— other than Apple—to address Lion compatibility, the loss of MagicPrefs 10.6.x support makes transitioning a waiting game. Users' who have mission critical situations to deal with know what I am talking about. A fine app, but sure wish the Developer had held onto 10.6.x support a wee bit longer. :)

This would be a great replacement for the (sadly discontinued) MagicMouse app, if it were possible to tune down the sensitivity of the touch-area on the mouse. It's driving me nuts how easy it is to accidentally tap-click when this action is enabled (something MagicMouse got right). Is there any way to turn this down?

I'm starting to have problems with the way this software behaves - it's installing software I do not want. Is there an option to disable the auto-update check? I do not see any. Is there a way to disable Magic Menu so that it doesn't re-install after each update? Is there a way to permanently disable all the 'extras' that have no bearing on the original purpose of MagicPrefs? I love the software, but I don't like all the other stuff going on. thanx.

Version 2.0 seems to have trouble during wakeup on my 1st gen 27" i7 iMac. Sometimes the MagicPrefs icon in the menu bar doesn't show until I open System Preferences and go the the MagicPrefs page. Then the MagicPrefs icon appears but System Preferences quits unexpectedly.
