Informant overview

Informant is a powerful all-access platforms which integrates calendaring tasks and notes management together as full-fledged citizens. No need to buy separate apps for your time management - Informant handles it all! Use templates or Quick Entry to create new events and tasks quickly. Watch as we bring all the advanced features of our mobile app - Pocket Informant - to the desktop.

It's designed to take full advantage of macOS. We didn’t just port Pocket Informant's mobile interface, but started with a fresh, new design born of months of sketching, prototyping, and real-world use. The tabbed interface gives you the ability to have your calendar customized -- not just in one window of the app -- but for each tab. No other calendar app gives you this kind of power on the desktop. Our focus has been on designing a planner that brings your agenda and todo/task list together visually and organizationally. Informant has been at the forefront of the digital-calendar revolution, and we will continue to forge new roads in the next year. See how Informant on iOS, Android, and now macOS will revolutionize how you plan your life.

Features
  • Rich Text Notes - Synchronize with Informant Sync, Toodledo, and Evernote. Our Rich Text Notes editor lets you record audio notes and style rich text notes to your hearts content. Note: We do not sync with Apple Notes as Apple does not yet offer any integration points for Apple Notes
  • Tabbed Interface with Search - Our tabbed interface lets you work with as many tabs as you wish, with each tab showing your choice of calendar view or tasks view. Search any event, task, or note from the top right with the search field. Search options allow you to narrow or widen your search to only show what you need. Elegant and powerful.
  • Task Smart Filters - Smart Filters are a powerful innovation unique to Informant. They let you create your own filters for tasks with a powerful rule editor - similar to how Apple Mail filters work. You can create filters for tasks in a specific project with a status or specific importance. Whatever you are looking for - our Smart Filters can help you organize your tasks!
  • Informant Today Menu - Tap on the Informant icon in the menu bar to quickly bring up a "Focus View" and see what’s happening at a glance. Pick any date you want to display, and enter new events or tasks using the Quick Entry line. Setup a hotkey to bring up our Natural Language Entry-based Quick Entry screen and create new events or tasks as quickly as you can type them. Drag the popover and it detaches into a calendar window you can have running all the time.
  • GTD® Tasks - You can trust Informant with all your daily tasks. With Quick Entry, adding tasks is a snap. Filter, group, tag, and categorize your tasks however you like. Includes full support for projects, contexts, subtasks, checklists and multi-level subtasks.
  • Customizable - Informant has always been known to be a powerhouse due to its customizability. We give you plenty of options to affect the appearance of your events, tasks, and notes so you can show as little or as much information as you like. Use colors or icons to better identify types of events, tasks, and notes; setup default alarms or default due/start dates - we have designed an easy to use and understand set of customization options to let you tweak everything to your heart’s desire.
  • Drag and Drop - Drag and drop events and tasks to any date on our side-bar mini-month or in the calendar views; events to new calendars; tasks between groups or to a new project/tag/context; and more!
  • Templates - Templates let you quickly create an event or task. For example create a Soccer template with a preset title, icon, time, calendar, and tag.
  • Powerful Projects - Set Projects with with a default sync account, templates, due date, and three different project types: Parallel, Sequential, or Single Action.
  • Quick Entry - Assign shortcuts to Quick Entry and quickly create new events or tasks using your natural language entry - or create new Notes at any time.
  • QuickLook Summary - Gives you direct access to phone numbers, addresses, and links to access macOS’s native Maps, Contacts, and Safari viewers.
  • Colors and Icons - Color your calendar days to indicate days without using an event. Assign a specific color or icon to an event, task, or note to make it stand out or indicate something special.
  • Syncs with... - ...Informant Sync, Google Calendar/Tasks, Toodledo, and Evernote. Access your Mac’s built-in Calendar and Reminders for perfect integration.

I like this app. One place to edit notes, have multiple tabs with multiple presentations of the data of my calendars and my tasks in the same place.

I just tested Informant for Mac since I used it on my Palm Treo long time ago and was very happy with it at that time. When comparing the new version of Informant with BusyCal which I bought and use every day for me Informant offers no real benefit. While BusyCal (especially in combination with BusyContacts) offers me a lot of additional features Informant couldn't convince me especially by its design. E.g. why are contacts not integrated in the main window view? And if I select a single contact in a separate window another separate window pops up. The overall interface seems not to be developed by a professional designer. Here's where Fantastical IMHO clearly leads in this space which I bought, too – but don't use it anymore because of the clear superiority of BusyCal-BusyContacts combo's features for my needs. So no need to discuss Informant's pricing which would lead to further concerns with its subscription model.

I was intrigued by this app. Then I saw, it has a subscription model now. Note to the developers, subscription models are good for you - and perhaps good for organizations who buy in volume and are able to fold the cost of upgrades into the cost of doing business. For the rest of us, as the old Apple adage goes, we who "think different", subscription models suck. I am voting no to your app with my dollars withheld. And that probably hurts me too as your app looks like I could benefit from it. Too bad, so sad. Subscription models totally suck. I'm just saying. Of course, good advice only matters when you listen to it. ;-)

I want to love this app so much. I have been using it for a few years and now with version 5 on iOS and their unreal subscription model, I don't think I can. I do love the dark theme, it looks great, but the cost of a subscription plus the cost of the desktop app is just too much. Version 5 would probably suit me just fine as I just need a fantastic week calendar layout, I'm still up in the air.

First le me say I am a long time user of PI. It all started with the Palm and now on iOS. Until PI5, I was very happy with both apps and support etc. so I am not here for bashing. Fanatic Software last week have released PI iOS 5. Except for a new UI they have also changed to an subscription model. You may pay € 26,50 per year to have about the same options as in the paid version of PI4. Now I paid more than 20 months ago for a beta of PI macOS which still has not been released. It feels as if I have funded the development of PI5 iOS and now we have to wait what their subscription model will bes for PI 1 macOS. Well to be honest I won't wait and will further focus on BusyCal and Fantastical. Both apps are gerat on both iOS and macOS without any subscription model....

I have been using Informant for years and find it invaluable. It's on my iPhone and iPad (one purchase for both). I like the fact that it includes Contacts, Calendars, Notes. and Tasks in one app. It is on the home screen on my devices and I use it many times a day. There are better Task apps (e.g., Things), but the convenience of doing everything by only opening one app almost keeps me from using it. Syncing by way of Informant Sync almost instantly and has been flawless. I have used BusyCal which is good, but you must have a second app, BusyContacts, on the Mac,. to have that functionality on the computer and Contacts are not included in iOS versions. Then you must use Reminders on iOS to have to do functionality. Informant is all inclusive. Documentation is excellent and the few times I have contacted support with questions, they have been very responsive, friendly and helpful. They communicate frequently about upcoming developments and thing they are working on. There is nothing I dislike about this app. I highly recommend that you at least try it.

I tried this once before and it wasn't for me. But with a new version I wanted to try it again. However once you have downloaaded it Fanatic Software won't let you try it again. I guess they don't need any more business.

Regardless of functionality, the app has an antiquated look -- reminds me of Windows95. Maybe the screenshot provided here is a rough draft and the app will launch with a more modern UI :-(

This is early access application so it is not complete yet which is ok. Just be aware of it so you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for a complete and refined version of Pocket Informant on the Mac this may not be for you yet. But when it is finished, it will be a strong contender. Some features are not ready yet such as Contexts and Smart Filters. But they will be available later. Here are some issues that I like to bring forward in the hope they will be addressed before final release. Task lists in the Sidebar and the system menu bar Informant dropdown has the tasks shoved to the right side of the panel. It looks like the programmers are making room on the left side for an expansion triangle, but there is too much space, more than an expansion triangle would need and it is creating a squished look of information towards the right side of the information panel, unbalanced and unrefined but remember this application is not complete yet. Task priority is depicted as vertical colored bars as in the IOS version. For me the color bars do not work and I cannot use them but other users love them so I'm sure they're going to stay. But I feel the bars are too thick and they do not have that OS X Yosemite look. The Days (Week) view has a pane above the Hourly view that contains the All-Day events. This pane does not auto adjust to fit the number of events inside of it so you'll see a lot of wasted empty space towards the top of your calendar window. This tends to push hourly events towards the bottom third of the window. The pane can be selected by the user and adjusted in size but the size does not stick. If you move away from the view and then switch back to it you lose the user settings. My feeling is an auto-adjusting pane would be the best power feature but I believe the programmers feel it would result in an inconsistent interface. I personally don't see the issue but then again we are all different. Also the bottom border of the pane is a bit too thick and looks out of place. The event bars in the Focus and Days views are square-cornered while in Month view they are rounded. This interface element isn’t consistent. Using the same interface elements across all information panels indicates refinement. The Task panel works well at the basic level, currently probably a notch above the OS X Reminders app, but the section is still a work in progress. Can’t wait for Contexts and Smart Filters to be developed and refined so I can start using these power features to manage my tasks effectively. I am looking forward to the finish product and I am happy to support their development process with a purchase of this work.
