iCab

v6.2 is out. The release notes: - -> New Feature: Tab Groups • Tab Groups can be used to save all the Tabs of a window as a unit (group) so the groups can be re-opened later again easily again. Open tab groups will automatically remember all the changes within the group (like links which were opened, tabs opened or closed etc), so when re-opening a group, their latest state will be restored. Tab Groups can be managed via new „Tabs“ menu and via sidebar. - New Feature: Sidebar • It is now possible to have a sidebar in browser windows (via „View“ menu or via button in the browser toolbar). The sidebar allows easy access to the „page overview“ (directly jump to each section or paragraph of the current web page), the „link overview“ (list of all links of a web page), and the „tab groups“ (easy access to tab groups). - New Feature: QR Codes • All links, bookmarks, etc within the App can be displayed as QR code from within the contextual menus. This makes it easy to open them in a smartphone because it is possible to scan the addresses instead of typing them in manually. The QR codes can be also saved as file by simply dragging them to the Finder. - Bugfix: a workaround for a bug of the macOS solves issues with „data“ URLs which include a fragment identifier - Bugfix: „data“ URLs did not work when used directly in the address bar - Bugfix: Mac AppStore links should now open correctly within the Mac AppStore App

Oddly, v6.1.5 won't download, even if you attempt to get it from the dev website! However, it updates as nicely as ever form within the app itself. If you save installers, save that resulting copy after installing the update.

6.1.1 zip file is messed up - won't unzip - Unarchiver and Stuffit Expander both failed on it.

Still slow and far behind Brave, Firefox, Opera. Not recommended.

A friend of mine recommended this to me and it works really well and has a very nice set of built-in functions. Nice app for its price.

It is essentially the most element rich iOS program accessible. Also, it appears to show as quick as Safari. (The lone thing it can't do is naturally simplified web joins into Notability, something Safari oversees.) Otherwise, iCab is unsurpassable! Prior to buying any extra utility, be certain iCab doesn't effectively offer that capacity!

I was initially sceptical about a web browser less than 7MB in size. But it is and it works quite well and has a very good range of built-in features. Although it won't win any awards for high speed, it's fast enough. I like it because it seems to be able to access many websites because of a 'choose the best compatibility' feature that other bloatware browsers don't have.

iCab 6.0.3 is out! It's excellent with a lot of new features and more coming! It looks great! v6.x does NOT require a new license. Nice! Here are the v6.0 release notes. (I'll post the v6.0.1 - 6.0.3 notes separately) - - • iCab 6.0 is completely rewritten, therefore there’re many new features and existing many old features have changed. The new release uses the newer modern web engine of the macOS which is much faster and smoother than the classic engine that was used by older iCab releases. It also supports more web technologies. • Because the modern web engine had too many limitations under macOS 10.12 and older, the minimum macOS release for the new version of iCab is therefore macOS 10.13. Older macOS releases are no longer supported. This has the advantage that iCab can now rely on many native macOS features which are only available in newer macOS releases. • iCab now uses the native „Tabs“ feature of the macOS, so the tabs in iCab will now behave just as the Tabs in all other Apps using the native Tabs feature (like Safari Mail, the Finder etc). All the capabilities of the macOS to manage tabs are fully available in iCab as well. • iCab is now using the native filter capabilities of the modern web engine of the macOS. Therefore the filter manager is completely new. The new filter manager supports the popular filter lists from AdBlock Plus, Easylist, uBlock and compatible. The filter manager window provides a few links to web sites where you can find these filter lists. using the „Add“ or „Subscribe“ links on these sites can directly import these filter lists, but you can also simply download these lists into a file and then use the „import“ feature of the Filter Manager to import these files. • iCab 6.0 supports syncing of tabs, bookmarks, reading list, filters and search engine via iCloud. The iCloud sync is compatible to iCab Mobile for the iOS platform, so you can now sync all this data between iCab for the Mac and iCab Mobile for the iOS as well. • The new web engine provides more control over audio and video playback. It is possible to immediately stop all audio and video playback with a certain menu command. But it can also make sure that audio and video playback only occurs on the active tab. • Modules of the module manager can be put into the status bar, so these modules are directly accessible very fast and comfortably. • The App supports private tabs which do not save any private data (Cookies, Caches etc). The only reason I used iCab was because it ran on older versions of MacOS. By requiring 10.13, that key feature is gone and this browser is dead to me. Why would anyone spend money on this when there are better browsers out there.

I love iCab. I've used it on my various machines, legacy and otherwise, for over a decade. It benefits from their being a stable version for practically every flavor of Mac: 2.9.9 is the best browser you can get for a 68k Mac, hands down, and 3.0.5 is the best you can find for PowerPC-based Macs running MacOS 9 or earlier. I don't use it quite as much on my modern MacBook Pro, but when I do, I'm consistently impressed by its speed and stability, and always end up wondering why it doesn't get started more often. Registration costs ten bucks, but the only restriction for unregistered users is an unobtrusive shareware reminder popup when you open the application. Even so, I like it enough to support it, and have had my license for years now. iCab, you've been the bomb for 20 years... and I hope you stay that way for 20 more.

iCab may not be free, but I've been using it for years in preference to others because it's one of the most stable and secure browsers available and has features that are not available elsewhere.

IT is fantastic that iCab is still updated AND supports Mac OSX 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 Nothing else does. As of Dec 2018, the most recent version is 5.8.6 which is available from the iCab.de website (even if not available here at MacUpdate). For people running older Macs iCab is your only choice for a browser that is updated enough to do modern SSL, yet still runs on those older Mac OSes. iCab is the last refuge, helping older Macs retain usefulness, even on secure sites such as Amazon. I will note that when running on Mac OSX 10.7, things are not as good as when running OSX 10.12. Because on OSX 10.7 Some sites such Bank of America, do not work 100%. Even after successful login, The BoA menus are partly broken & clicking on BillPay gets an error about lack of a secure connection. Mixed bag.

For years my prefered browser and I tried a lot of those others including Chrome, Firefox or Brave. iCab is still the best and fastest and can be configured in various ways. Love to see that there is still a browser for ‚developers‘ and not only those blinky full blows stupid ones.

This browser is both fast and useful. I recommend it over Chrome, Firefox or Opera.
