Eclipse IDE overview

Eclipse IDE is an extensible Java IDE for development of highly integrated tools.

The Eclipse Project is an open-source software development project dedicated to providing a robust, full-featured, commercial-quality, industry platform for the development of highly integrated tools. The mission of the Eclipse Project is to adapt and evolve the eclipse technology to meet the needs of the eclipse tool building community and its users, so that the vision of eclipse as an industry platform is realized.

Eclipse is a kind of universal tool platform - an open extensible IDE for anything and yet nothing in particular. The real value comes from tool plug-ins that "teach" Eclipse how to work with things - java files, Web content, graphics, video - almost anything one can imagine. Eclipse allows tool builders to independently develop tools that integrate with other people's tools so seamlessly you can't tell where one tool ends and another starts.

Okay, when starting Eclipse 3.5 on Tiger it prints out an error: This application requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or greater. So no Eclipse for us Tiger users then? Or would older version help and are they compatible with newer versions?

I started playing Eclipse SDK since version 3.0. I am getting very frustrated that it was not very stable. Very often, it worked on the first installation and failed on the subsequent activation. There is a need to come out with a simple and systematical trouble-shooting to isolate the cause of failure in activation for newbie in Java development. In addition, solving bugs in Eclipse for Mac OS X is relative slow as compared to other platform. In short, I would suggest to wait for more stable version in due course. In the mean time, I have preference for JBuilder 2005.

Better than any other Mac CVS client out there. A few issues: 1. Not native Mac Cocoa app 2. The CVS doesn't handle special Mac characters like, ñ, é, -, etc. 3. The interface is clumsy and not intuitive, though once you get the hang of it, it is manageable.

I love everything about it except: 1. The editor sucks a. no drag & drop editing b. totally un-Mac-like text selection behavior 2. Can't debug JSP directly, a la NetBeans If there were plugins available that would allow you to use BBedit, or even WASTE, as the editor and NetBeans to debug JSPs, this could be the perfect IDE!

A "must-have" for serious developers (working on platform independent (java) solutions) ... on OS X perhaps not "as-native-as" Project Builder, but, get it, if you want to develop cross-platform business apps (or just want to improve your programming knowledges, including an *originial* access to the SWT-GUI-API). 5 stars, just because of ... ;) (One note: I feel a bit worried about the circumstance that's just working on 10.2 and above ...)
