Diogenes

For now it's fine, I use it in my work on a regular basis. I do worry, however, because as near as I can tell it is a 32-bit program and its developer has evidently ceased supporting it. So what's going to happen when OSX begins supporting only 6 4-bit ones? I can imagine one or two possible workarounds, bu t I don't especially want to be put to the necessity of trying to make one of them work.

Current version is 3.2, fully compatible with Yosemite and the current Perl version. Apparently only needs the older proprietary OS X Java distribution, which users should install in addition to the standard Java anyway.

This application is really good. I still know the old Pandora software, and it had a few features that are not yet implemented in Diogenes, and it was a bit easier to use. There's another TLG-reader called "Hellespont II", but with Diogenes there's PHI-support and an included dictionary, which makes it the best MacOSX-application for working with the TLG- & PHI-databases at the moment. And it's free! For those who still need a BetaCode converter, you can use the freeware "UniGreek" by Philip Dow, the author of the outstanding Journler application: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21443/unigreek PS… for the other reviewers who asked for the location of the databases: the TLG- and PHI-CDRoms have to be bought. They're not included in the Diogenes distribution.

I have the same problem as the previous user. Upon installation of Diogenes on a newly reformatted disk, any word search prompts me to find the tlg database. I assume this database must be located somewhere on my computer, for why else would an open-save dialogue box open as a prompt. But, information on where this database may exist cannot be found anywhere. Questions: Where is this database? (Is it on my computer or on the web?) How do I connect to it? PS: Diogenes was installed and worked (relatively well) on the same disk before it was reformatted (via clean install). I am not sure why it worked then and not now.

Will someone please tell me how to access the databases Diogenes needs to search? Are they online? Are they free? Where??

I want to correct my original criticism. It turns out you can create and save your own user-defined sets of authors to search. I missed this because the availability of this option is not clearly indicated in the list of Features on the Diogenes website. On the first page, go Action > Manage user-defined corpora, a page will come up with instructions. Note, too, you can save search results as html files My other criticism stands. Being Mozilla/Firefox-based, it's hard (for a non-programmer, anyway) to see why Diogenes should not be Universal. If it were, I'd give Diogenes fives across the board. Still and all, for those Classicsts who use Intel Macs this is a fine research tool for addressing TLG, PHI, etc. We are very indebted to Peter Heslin.

(Thank you, MU, for posting this particular application). For classicists who use Intel Macs, Diogenes is for better or worse the only game in town. The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae Greek corpus can of course be accessed online as well (or better) than in CD-ROM format, but we Latinists have to rely on the Packard Humanities Institute CD, and previous searching software, notably Pandora, only operated in the Classic environment. For many purposes,Diogenes is quite fine, but it lacks a couple of features that prevent it from being a tool that satisfies the needs of serious scholars (and who the heck else would want to use it?) The most serious shortcoming is that one cannot create a list of authors one wants to search (say, all Roman elegiac poets) and save it for repeated use: for each search you have to create a new list, which is enormously time-wasting and frustrating. (The author once assured me a future version would have this feature, but his new enthusiasm for making Diogenes browser-based seems to have taken precedence, and I can't help wondering whether the new browser interface f v.3 will make this feature more difficult or imposssible to implement). Also, it would be helpful if Diogenes would imitate the TLG website and implement case-sensitive searching. Like many classicists, I am keeping a careful eye on Diogenes' development. But I suspect that many classicists feel the way I do, that Diogenes needs improvement of functionality rather than a new interface, so that v. 3 seems a bit dismaying (I for one find I am more comfortable sticking to v. 2).
