DEVONthink Pro is DEVONtechnologies' document and information management solution. It supports a large variety of file formats and stores them in a database enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Today's maintenance release addresses a few small issues discovered after the previous release. A regression kept global smart groups from updating automatically. Splitting PDFs didn't modify the initial document. And renamed favorites didn't always retain the change after relaunching.
We also added a few improvements too. HTML formats now support using Paste with Source Link. It's easier to change the font of PDF text annotations and automatic naming of merged or grouped items better supports prefixing numbers. We also made several modifications to improve reliability, including that of our sync engine.

DatePlaceholdersWithoutLeadingZerosto disable using prefixing zeros with date or time placeholders.
Improved
- Email messages that may not have displayed properly in Best Alternative view due to their internal line endings render better.
- You can now use the Edit > Paste with Source Link command in HTML, formatted notes, and webarchives.
- Missing or empty Finder comments are ignored when updating indexed items, both manually when using File > Update Indexed Item or after filesystem events, if the current internally stored comment of the indexed item exceeds the size limit of Finder comments or if the indexed item is stored on a network volume which might not reliably support Finder comments.
- Merged documents or grouped items better support automatic names beginning with numbers.
- DEVONthink detects updates for add-ons more reliably.
- The date-specific submenus in Insert Placeholders only include time-based placeholders when applicable.
- The Execute Script smart rule and batch processing action was renamed to Apply Script.
Improved (Sync)
- Improved how data transmission to sync stores is handled with remote syncs, especially with CloudKit.
Fixed
- Global smart groups didn't automatically update their item counts. Fixed.
- Splitting a PDF didn't modify the initial document. Fixed.
- In rare cases, invalid XML/HTML, e.g., from some RSS feeds, could crash DEVONthink. Fixed.
- While the Annotations panel was open, the font of a selected text annotation couldn't be changed. Fixed.
- Background colors weren't retained when converting rich text to formatted note or HTML. Fixed.
- Copying or pasting with a source link generated the wrong URL on EPUB documents viewed in Best Alternative mode. Fixed.
- In the Tags options for smart group, smart rule, and search criteria, the Wildcards placeholder wasn't displayed in empty fields. Fixed.
- Grouping top-level ordinary tags of the global inbox with no other database opened put them into the root of the database instead of into the Tags group. Fixed.
- Renaming favorited items didn't retain the changed name without a subsequent operation, e.g., reordering the favorites. Fixed.
- After grouping ordinary tags, indexed items using these tags were moved into the database if the hidden preference
EnableAutomaticConsolidationwas enabled. Fixed. -
.svgfiles were incorrectly imported as images on macOS Ventura and later. Fixed. - URL parameters, e.g.,
page=42, of item links in unsaved documents were ignored. Fixed. - It wasn't possible to set the
current timeproperty of a window or tab via AppleScript. Fixed.

- The background colors of HTML or formatted note documents weren't displayed when viewed in the web interface. Fixed.

You do have to be very careful what you put in there, especially complete website archives etc.. Could destroy your database (am in the process of grieving loss of over 10GB of years of archiving, won't be recuperable in any way since DTP dispatches its files in very complex ways, destroying the original structure integrity of the original hierarchy, unless using export functions.. which of course cannot be done at this point since database cannot be open. All I have access to viewing the content of the archive in Finder.. and the mess that is in there). I wonder more and more how useful this, in many ways Finder is much much less risky for organizing. Definitely not all the bells and whistles but since we're tributary to Spotlight in any case.. I used to rave about this app, not so sure anymore. I'd almost say.. stick to the Finder.. it can do all sorts of organizational tricks much less risky.

A great tool for those who need it (not for those who complain but clearly bought the wrong tool). Rock solid, well thought out. But you have to read at least part of the manual, if is not completely obvious what can and cannot be done. When SpotLight is not up to your tasks anymore, have a look at DTPro and be prepared to invest some time to learn, you will be rewarded :)

I've used DEVONthink since it was 2.x. I departed from it for a while, but I'm back and loving its usefulness. It's quite handy to use with iOS devices where Files.app is quite limited. I tried to do everything with just plain text files and folders, but I finally broke down and admitted it was a foolish idea after all. DEVONthink works quite well for capturing all kinds of info with minimum friction and maintain it in a searchable and usable way. Now that I have tried the overly-simplistic method, I can't emphasize enough how useful DEVONthink really is.

I bought this and thin it's one of the worst piece sof software I've ever bought. I tried and tried to make use of it, but the kludgy and confusing interface and workpath was impossible.
I'm a historian for a living, and tried to use this for a book I was writing. it was so frustrating that I just gave up on it. Since then I've written another book using just Zotero and FineReader pro, and I was just cleaning up the ol' hard drive and oh yeah, there's DevonthinkPro. Why did I ever buy that awful piece of frustrations-ware?

$199 for DEVONthink Pro. NOT $99. DEVONthink Standard is $99. - - Why the confusion? DEVON messed around with their application naming with version 3. What WAS DEVONthink Pro v2.x is NOW DEVONthink Standard 3.x. Check their website for details regarding changes. (o_0)

This appears to be a marginally useful database app. I am uncertain because I am unable to really figure out how to use it because the entire endeavor is so inextricable confusing. The problem is that I am an educator in need of a solution NOW, not after 6 months of using the product to figure out how to use it. What is even more egregious is the fact that they offer, but do not honor educator discounts. I have tried to obtain this coveted discount but have been denied. They gave me the directions to get the discount, I re-applied, but they refuse to answer now. There are alternatives to this software, and I do not need an overly militant sales dept who drives up revenue by lying to the public.... If their sales dept acts this way, can you immagine what the rest of the user experience would be like?

Looks like they did a good job cleaning up the interface of the desktop app. Unfortunately, their website is confusing. They need to hire a marketing person to tell them what needs to be on their site so that it isn't confusing for customers (and people who potentially want to upgrade) to figure out. A good comparison chart of ALL versions would be a start along with the price for each.
It looks like the upgrade from DEVONThink Pro 2 to DEVONThink Pro 3 to get some of the same features that I had in 2 is pretty steep compared to the about $50 I paid last time.

I have been using DevonThink (pro) for a few years now.
And I am very satisfied with it.
I am now considering moving to version 3 but I continue to find the distinction between the different versions rather confusing!
More precisely, I don't like their 'Comparison Edition' page!

Rather than see 'The standard edition offers all features portrayed on the DEVONthink product page except those listed above', I would have preferred a simple presentation of all the main features with 3 columns. 'DEVONthink - DEVONthink Pro - DEVONthink Server'
IMHO it would have been much clearer.

I agree it's a relatively powerful piece of software but I tried this vs. Paperless and Neat and found both those two apps on par and at 1/3 the price. I might be old school but I don't think shareware, as this product is listed as, should cost $200.

Been using DTP since its early days, am very glad they finally modernized and streamlined it (it's always been very stable and highly professional). It's a complex and very powerful app I could not live without, and that is hard to describe as it can be and do so many things. It's central in my Mac-Life. I can only say I'm psyched about this "rebirth".

Regarding v3.0beta1, it downloads as just “DEVONthink”, no Pro. I verified on their website that this is as intended. There are no other beta versions. Have at it. There is a blog discussion of v3.0beta1 here:
