cTiVo overview

cTiVo is a free Mac application to download shows from your TiVo (Roamio, Premiere, HD, S3 or S2 devices) and convert them to many popular formats and devices. Its goal is to be extremely simple to set up and use, but very flexible. cTiVo provides complete hands-off operation: once you choose or subscribe to your shows, everything else is automated. For example, after you've set it up, every morning, you will find all your favorite shows from your TiVos loaded onto your iPhone or iPad.

Just installed cTiVo, while the picture quality on the best resolution is incredable the reliability is not. I am lucky to get 5 out of 8 that actually transfer. Keep getting error / retry dialog. I have been keeping track of the episodes that error out and I have tried dialing down the resolution with no effect. Does my roamio pro just record wacked out episodes or what is happening< Thanks in advance for your help!!

cTivo is really convenient and seamless, and it works well for anyone who has a TiVo. The one recommendation I have is that, at least in my experience, the default encoder (ffMpeg) tends to lose audio sync and produce crummy output. It's really easy (and free) to download HandBrakeCLI and configure cTivo to use that instead, and in my opinion, it works MUCH better. Also, I think it should've been called "ViTo." :)

Owning a TiVo is the difference between a dumb DVR & a machine that can learn about your viewing habits and make intelligent suggestions for shows to watch or record. Of course, if you're like me and would like to keep some of the shows or movies on TiVo, the choice used to be either keep it forever on TiVo and miss other programming or buy an external hard drive to add storage. Then I found out about cTiVo. cTiVo is the best option of all for me. I can use this freeware to download my shows to my Mac. Most will be happy enough just having a copy of their shows, commercials and all, in iTunes, but you can go one step better and mark the commercials so they can be skipped. In my case, I just let cTiVo run overnight every couple of days to download, decrypt and encode all my shows I want to keep to my Mac. I then edit out all the commercials on the weekends via iMovie and move the finished files to my Plex library. It is a system that works for me and I couldn't do it without cTiVo. I'd love to shake the developer's hand and thank them profusely for helping me archive all my favorite shows.

I note that ctivo is in the startup items library of my iMac, El Capitan. Is there a way to safely remove it from startup as my Mac is slow to boot?

Hopefully someone can help! My older version of ctivo simply stopped working yesterday - it recognized it was online but was blank for listing the shows/movies on the Tivo Roamio. I tried resetting the router, turning the Tivo off, computer restart, redownloading ctivo - but nothing works! I just tried downloading this newest version 2.4.0b4 and it is still blank! Nothing is listed but the program does seem to know if I turn my wifi on and off (will become red instead of black). Any ideas?

I know I'm a little late to the party but after ten long years I finally got sick of giving Comcast one cent more than I had to—to rent their crappy, outdated DVR—so I picked up a Tivo Roamio a few months ago and haven't looked back. I first discovered pyTivo to transfer files back and forth from Mac to Tivo and although it was a little daunting to set up, I am now so happy with it it's stupid. But now that I found cTivo, I'm ecstatic! It works beautifully. I haven't used the commercial function yet, but I've transferred a few titles to my Mac to edit them manually and it couldn't have been easier. Then I use pyTivo to transfer them back and all is right with my digital world. I don't hand out too many 5 star ratings but this is brilliant. Thank you Hugh Mackworth!

I used to use KMTTG over a year ago when it was almost the only game in town. The software that comes with Toast Titanium for working with Tivo was pathetically awful. It just plain wouldn't work. I eventually came upon KMTTG and it took a while to figure it out and get the settings just right to work. Even then, it was a slow, laborious process. I had dabbled with iTivo but while the interface was much easier, functionally it was dead in the water for me. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out about cTivo and gave it a try. I knew that it was based on the iTivo project so I didn't have high expectations. I can't begin to think of how many software titles out there that have been renamed but weren't functionally updated. cTivo worked with a minimum of fuss on my old 2008 dual quad core Mac Pro and works even faster on my current laptop, a 2012 i7 Intel Macbook Pro. The only thing that slows cTivo down is that I'm grabbing my shows from my Tivo wirelessly. If I used a wire instead, I suspect the download of the show (the longest part of the process) would speed up considerably. It is stupid easy compared to what used to be available to Tivo owners who use Mac. There are a load of features hiding under the hood of cTivo that make it sing for anyone if they take the time to browse the wiki and play with it a little bit. It can convert the Tivo files into a wide range of different formats. You can have it mark commercials or even clip them out altogether if you're feeling more confident (I just have it mark them and I review them before clipping them out in Final Cut Pro X). The recordings I'm able to save from Tivo via cTivo are as good as the originals from what I see on my 1080p TV, so no complaints here. I'm always telling fellow Mac users with Tivos about cTivo and I'm amazed that there are so few that seem to be aware of it. In summary, cTivo takes the guesswork out of getting your favorite shows and movies off the Tivo and making them Mac-friendly for editing and/or archiving. It's free. I can't recommend it enough.

I am new to MacUpdate today. I have a MacBook Air and the new OS. I just found cTivo and am very happy I did. My problem is that when I try to use cTivo on a movie I recorded on my Tivo, which is 3 hrs. long (due to advertisements), cTivo only converts about a quarter of the file. What it converts is awesome but obviously I need the whole file converted. Anybody have a solution out there? Thanks in advance.
