I have used this program for years, from Version 1x on, for Mac OS 10.4 to 10.11.6, and it has been fine all the time. I was also about to give up on it, since there were no udates for years until now. I liked SnowLeopard as an OS better, but I've no control over the system updates any more. Thankfully, the program just works, and seldom crashes for me.

I've been using Captain FTP since Version 1, and its always been a workhorse for me. However, there hasn't been any updates since 2013, so I cannot say if this program works under El Captain 10.11. Version 6.5x worked fine under Snow Leopard for me. I know they dropped PPC support with Version 6.2. There are two 6.5 versions, one for 10.7 & higher, one for 10.6.

I finally got a reply from the "Captain". He told me to try this link http://xdsnet.net/captain/archive/CaptainFTP6.5.dmg I haven't tried it because I got the app from my backup drive. I am posting this for others that have SnowLeopard as their OS.

I downloaded and installed 6.5 which was supposed to be for Snow Leopard and I got a crash report stating "Incompatible library version: Captain FTP requires version 7.0.0 or later. " I have written to the developer about this and I didn't get a reply so far.I took the download both here and on his web site. I can not understand why even MacUpdate doesn't correct this glaring error which will cause a lot of inconvenience for Snow Leopard Users. Fortunately I had a backup copy of 6.5 on my back up volume and I installed it. I have to give 2 stars as I feel dismayed by the poor download situation.

I just downloaded 6.5, which they are calling a beta, and sent them this email that I'm reposting here: I'm using 6.5 beta. I thought you were going to have file listings with "down" triangles next to folders like in Finder windows, Transmit, Filezilla, etc…? I'm tired of having to double-click to drill down to a folder/file that may be nested 10 folders deep. And no, I don't want to create a 'favorite as folders' that I access because the folders change all the time and are on different servers. Nor do I want to create a virtual folder. Talk about unsecure, tedious, and another waste of programming. What is wrong with you people? You've been promising this functionality, at least to me, since version 5 and we can get it in a free program like Filezilla? Even Transmit has it. Open up your applications folder. Hit command+2. See the cute little triangles on the left? Is that so hard to duplicate? Geez, if this doesn't come out in the final of 6.5 I'm switching to Transmit or something else. The only thing stopping me is that I can't export my address book (over 25 servers as I'm a web developer) into anything usable in another FTP program. I'm getting carpal tunnel from all the double-clicking just to get to a stupid file or folder that happens to be nested deep in the bowels of a server. I also can't have different editors for different file types, and there's still no quick look (just a View button, or shift+cmd+L). Why can't it just be as simple as hitting the space bar as in the Finder and Transmit? Sure you have a lot of options, but it's overkill. In all the years I've used CFTP, I never once used virtual folders or favorite folders. You crammed $129 worth of stuff into a program, sell it for $29, and then make it an unpleasant experience that is NOT growing with the times or the Mac OS X. Also, beta or not, the program crashes at least once a week, usually when I'm doing something mission critical. Why don't you sell a slimmed down version with the stuff people want, an interface that's like the Finder, and then make a version of this and sell it to Windows users.

old outdated interface, but used to be a good client only big draw back next to old interface is that you can only use it on one machine so no way to have it installed on laptop and home mac

This FTP application is by far the easiest to use because of it's drag and drop features and separated window. I have website building software I use for my business website that has it's own built-in FTP, but Captain FTP exceeds that and all others I have used. I have been using this software for several years and their updates always coincide with Mac X, unlike others that are usually behind a few of months. I would recommend Captain FTP to anyone who needs a stable, user friendly, and full feature FTP client. Their support is second to none. Keep up the Good Work!!

our new choice of ftp apps in our photo agency. compatible with almost every ftp server worldwide supporting all protocols, and with ease of use interface. very handy to work with. in combination with crowznest our outdoor photographers use it to transfer pictures over mobile connection just once, crowznest delivers them with hot folders via broadband to several clients automatically. and also very important for us - fast support and personal answers provided for problems!

Captain FTP is an excellent FTP/Webdav program, even works with Box.net. It is also easy to set up and using Crowsnest or Virtual folders it is very easy to use it to automate uploads.

I am a professor at a community college and teach several online classes. Our college has a main server and I upload all my documents, jpegs, and web pages to this server. Previously, I used a different ftp program. I wasn't satisfied and looked online. I have been using Captain FTP for several years now and it does exactly what I need it to do. I like the fact that everything is right there for me to see. I don't have to dig around to find things. It is simply the best!

Well, I like this software a lot because of the two separated windows, that allow a clearly arranged transfer. Apart from this, this is the best App that can compete with the famous Windows-only software FlashFXP. If I only think of the yellow thing-that-you-usually-put-into-your-bath mac tool, which opens two connections per FTP server, one to upload/download, the other to browse... With CaptainFTP I have found a reliable and professional tool to manage my ftp transfers.

An excellent product and excellent service. I previously used "Fetch" for a long time (at least 10 years), Captain FTP is a lot easier to use (intuitively and functionally). I sometimes have to use Captain FTP to login to tens of accounts daily, it has never been an issue (the same can't be said for CyberDuck, which I tried briefly on a recommendation ... and then found Captain FTP). This software publisher also seems to be in tune with Mac OS X upgrades. I consider Captain FTP to have been a good investment. Regards, Barry Coutts, PMP

This combines some great features (scheduling, Growl or e-mail notification, WebDav support for .Mac) in a way no other currently available FTP client does. But I won't buy it. Why? Because they charge for upgrades (the most you can do is buy 1 year's worth of so-called "upgrade insurance"). Competing clients like Transmit and Yummy provide free upgrades.

I know - now - that it's not open-source; bute they gave non-profit-organisations the possibility to get a free serial - and therefore I can live without Open-Source, but cheap (in this case free) programs!
