Bricksmith overview

Bricksmith allows you to create virtual models of your Lego creations and enjoy them in all three dimensions. It is an excellent tool for creating instructions of your Lego building projects.

Bricksmith offers access to thousands of parts and dozens of colors. It also provides model-making tools for creating steps and submodels for intricate creations. Best of all, you'll never run out of bricks.

The program is based on LDraw, a fan effort to create 3D models of Lego bricks. Converters are available which enable you to feed your creations into a raytracer to produce beautiful 3D renderings.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

What’s new in version 3.1.0

Updated on Sep 30 2022

New Features
  • Filter colors by material
  • “Goto model” opens referenced LDR files and switches submodels based on selection.
  • “Change origin” moves all parts in a sub-model and corrects changes where used.
  • “Split Model” copies a sub-model into the parent so individual bricks can be edited.
  • “Add Model from Selection” turns the selection into sub-model and inserts it.
  • Parts can be nudged and oriented along their own axis based on their current orientation.
  • Scrollers will always maintain relative scroll position during zoom
  • Improved performance in editing operations
  • Filter strings in part browser are much faster
  • Part color randomizer
  • Dark Mode support
  • Universal binary for Intel and Apple Silicon
Bugs Fixed
  • Content now renders on Mac OS 11+
  • crash on 10.6.8 when closing heavily nested peered files
  • Make sure not to file unofficial parts that shadow the official library in multiple categories; fixes missing parts
  • Fix crash on on quit if the user saves changes
  • Fixes undo for multi-angle rotations
  • Part migration preserves origin
  • Fixes crash when dragging a triangle primitive
  • Fixed minifigure dialog not closing
  • Fixed coordinate text field contents disappearing in inspectors
  • Fixed Dimensions calculation to use exact Lego measurements instead of approximations
  • Model manager wasn't correctly tracking peer files in sub-directores
  • Fixed up-down axis being reversed (in screen space) when the model is upside down and we are in turntable view mode

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAwesome!!! It works very well. This is the first real successful open-source software I've tried. It looks and feels like a Macintosh application, and on my very first try, I could actually create one of the models that my brother invented in our childhood 30 years ago!! One thing I miss, though, is export step-by-step as PDF (enabling printing would almost do the trick for now, as the print-dialog gives you the opportunity). Beautiful; and I'm impressed on how many parts are included; even the 4.5V motors that are almost impossible to get these days! Good job guys!

Very nice game. My son plays with it. He tests first an idea with it and can realize it than with real Lego.

Very cool little program. Been working on a little model plane off and on for the last couple days and it is just good ol'lego fun! Couple things I would like to see though. First, a display axis in the perspective view would be helpful.(I think my whole plane is turned 90 deg.) Second, either have the color of the preview piece be in the current color or have the color be able to be set to something other than white. Sometimes its hard to make out what you are looking at. I also agree than a different way of finding the parts you want / having a "favorites" would be very nice indeed. Please keep up the great work on it!

While this program has a lot of room to grow, it is one FANTASTIC piece of Lego goodness. Thank you thank you thank you! My only complaint is that changing the camera view could be better but otherwise an outstanding contribution to the LDraw community.

pretty cool! I can play lego again, but navigating through briks is not so easy and it will be nice to have a place where you tore your favorite pieces. And some bricks don't appear. Also deplacing elements only with arrows can be a pain.

As a piece of freeware this is simply amazing! Takes a while to get familar with the interface, but all the better for the fun your can have as you build 'stuff' and re-live your childhood.

This is a cool program but it has a very high learning curve. I recomend starting off with a model rather than a Mini-figure because those take some real fine tuning to get them lo look right. But it is rewarding to sit back and see the finished product in 3-D.

Revision notes *are* available ;) New Features * Shading * Fast-draw mode while rotating * Piece Count utility * Dimensions utility (including Legonian Imperial Feet) * Zoom controls in the Part Browser * A simple way to add submodel references * "Customize Toolbar" menu item * Support for "Unofficial" parts folder Bugs Fixed * Canvas is never too small when opening documents. General Notes * Drawing time should be roughly on par with Bricksmith 1.0, despite the drain of shading.
